5.0 out of 5 stars A RECENT ADDITION TO THE "MISSIONARY REFERENCE LIBRARY", March 8, 2011
This review is from: Our Search for Happiness (Missionary Reference Library) (Paperback)
Melvin Russell Ballard, Jr. (born 1928) is an American businessman and a religious leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). He has served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 1985. This book was first published in 1993.

He wrote in the Introduction, "If I had to pick one word to describe my objective in writing this book, it would be 'understanding.' More than anything else, I would like those who read these pages---especially those who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints---to better understand the church and its members... This book is about comprehension and understanding, not conversion. It has more to do with building trust, appreciation, and respect than it does with increasing church membership."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"(A)s the second member of the Godhead comprised of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, (Jesus) represented Heavenly Father in His dealings with earthly prophets and partriarchs." (Pg. 9)
"Not that we can ever really become just like Jesus. But as we commit ourselves to Him---spiritually, physically, and emotionally---He blesses our lives with loving direction." (Pg. 15)
"THE INSPIRED REFORMERS: I believe that these great reformers were inspired by God. They helped to prepare the world for the restoration of the fulness of the gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1820 by creating a religious climate that allowed for difference. Because of the religious intolerance that existed in the world, I doubt that the gospel of Jesus Christ could have been restored even one century earlier." (Pg. 32)
"We have missionaries throughout the world who have experienced the gift of tongues that they might speak the gospel in its fulness to people who speak a different language." (Pg. 94)
"And because we're so involved in Church and family activities, we're sometimes perceived as being aloof or disinterested in what's going on in our neighborhoods and communities." (Pg. 110)
