Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Oswald is the subject of a number of recent books, but this is the first one that gives to his strange life the kind of photographic attention that has often been lavished on the Kennedy assassination itself-most notably by Groden in The Killing of a President. But although his labors must have been remarkable, and he has come up with dozens of pictures never seen before, it is difficult to see what this book hopes to accomplish. The text, except for a few curious emphases-Grodin spends much more space and detail on the killing of police officer J.D. Tippitt than on the assassination itself, and gives by far the longest and most detailed account ever of the efforts to save Oswald's life after he was shot by Ruby-adds little that is not already known. Often the pictures-of Oswald in Russia, in the marines, and arcana such as a shot of the Moscow hotel bath where he attempted suicide-seem to be included only because they were available, not because they shed light on his mysteries. And sometimes the captions talk about matters, or name people, not even mentioned in the text; at other times (the scenes in the garage before Ruby fired) they seem tendentious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Record!, November 16, 2009

Unlike his previous photobook, The Killing of a President, which did not show much rare or unseen photos, this one actually does! No matter what people say, it is good that Groden put's these together in case people and even The "History" Channel forgets certain facts surrounding this case.

There are photos of Oswald (of course) during his early years and rare pics of him in the Marines. You find that for a loner, he get's photographed a lot and has known many people and has traveled much more than people twice his age! The other rare photos are of David Ferrie and his home. It seems to be hard to find all pics relating to his home or death. Groden wrote about his death (there was a pic of his brain), but death scene photos and autopsy photos would not have hurt.

Speaking of which, he did show Oswald autopsy photos from a different perspective which was good. As the years go by, the circumstances surround this case becomes stranger and more impossible to believe. The more death/autopsy photos shown, the more real it becomes. All in all, this is a must have and is a good collection - in case people want to lose these things...

For his next photo book, he should put together photos of all witnesses, their crimes scene/death photos, where they lived, where they died and any suspects along with police reports. That needs to be on the record as well. I was able to find some on the net, but not most. When you see their death photos, it shows you just how serious the matter was.

Very good, very complete collection of information on Lee Harvey Oswald. I guess we will never know the whole truth, but this book is a great addition to information on the whole JFK shooting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book about Oswald (with some nice photos), December 23, 2005
This review is from: The Search for Lee Harvey Oswald: A Comprehensive Photographic Record (Hardcover)
Being Groden's follow-up to "The Killing Of A President", this book is a little anti climactic. That said, it is still very good as an overview of Oswald with some nice photos. Worth getting.
