Book Description

Emily Donovan doesn’t have a romantic bone in her body.

At least, that’s what her friends Ryan and Ashley keep telling her. They’re convinced her bad luck with men is directly related to her life-long lack of interest in all things romantic. When Emily’s latest relationship crashes and burns, she decides to go along with her friends’ plans for a romance research project. Sure, the idea that she’ll have better luck if she learns about the great romances of literature and film seems a little silly, but Emily figures it can’t hurt.

In no time at all, Emily finds herself buried under a mountain of romance novels, chick flicks, and sappy love songs, hopeful that her hard work will pay off with true love. When she meets Greg, Ashley and Ryan are convinced she’s found prince charming—after all, he’s rich, handsome, and totally into Emily. What more could she want? And why does it seem that her friend Elliot isn’t exactly happy for her?

Faced with misunderstandings, miscommunications, and a seemingly endless string of missteps, she is nevertheless determined to give true love a try. In doing so, Emily will eventually find that true romance, the kind that lasts, has little to do with stereotypes or clichés, and everything to do with finding out what’s in her own heart.

This is book #1 of the Love Story series. Don't miss the sequel, An Unexpected Love Story, out in December 2012!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fantastic Read! July 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm not a huge reader of the chick-lit genre, but that didn't stop me from becoming completely enthralled by In Search of a Love Story. The characters are complex and real--even some of the periphery characters are so complete that you could swear you met them somewhere. You quickly feel as though you know them all and are immediately invested in what will happen. Unlike some books where you want to knock the heroine in the head because she doesn't see what you, as the reader, see, you can completely understand why Emily Donovan is who she is and does what she does.

The book is a delight. I highly recommend it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute premise, but so obvious and predictable June 15, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When you want to learn how to do something, you consult experts, right? That's the advice that Emily's friends give her when they diagnose her as being clinically unromantic. She needs to immerse herself in romance novels and find herself a man.

Emily gamely - albeit a tad reluctantly - agrees. She reads books and watches chick flicks, and along the way attempts to apply what she learned to her love life. In a "meet cute" sort of set up, she runs into Greg, a handsome, successful prospect who adores her. Emily's friends think SCORE, but part of Emily wonders. Is he the one? Were the novels and movies right? Then there is her friend Elliott, who seems quite unimpressed with Greg. What's up with him?

If you already know how this ends, bravo. Then again, the ending is trumped so loudly and clearly as to render the reading of the novel fairly useless. I've read lots of books that give away their endings early on, but they make up for it by being entertaining, by having characters I like and wish I could get to know.

That is not the case here.

Faithful readers, I was bored. Bored, I tell you. There is so little about this book to recommend that I'm hard pressed to justify the two stars. It's cute, I suppose, and the premise is also cute. But it's just so transparent. That's what turns me off more than anything. There is no mystery or pull to keep reading.

If you want a mindless book with a cute little gimmick, then you could do worse than this. I guess I just wanted more.

Thanks to NetGalley for the preview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rachel Schuring does it again! December 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have added Ms. Schuring to my short list of "must read" authors. Her books are light and enjoyable. I can't wait for the second book in this series to come out.

In this book we follow the life of Emily, a physical therapist who has issues with her love life. Her friends try to help her find romance in her life. What follows is an interesting, enjoyable look at a young woman's growth and self discovery.

I will definitely recommend this book to my friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay read January 10, 2013
By Kat
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It started out good with Emily, the main character, lamenting about her taste in guys so
her friends Ashley and Ryan decide to teach her all things romantic. Romance
novels, chick flicks and the like. It, as one character put it, was a silly thing.
Then she meets somebody who thinks will work out and misses out on one who likes her.
The good things about this book is that the characters are human and make mistakes.
The only bad thing that I don't like is that the characters say that the guy that Emily
is changing her into someone she is not (which is true), but in trying to introduce her
to dating again and into romance, her friends are changing her too. In fact, most of
the characters (Ryan, Emily, Ashley, Chris) are clueless at some point to what they
want in a mate or what their mate wants. . .it's worth a read at least and if you do
like this, there are two other books in this series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not at the top of my list but it's on there March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a member book club and this one was on our reading list. I wasn't sure at first if I would like it because I was very frustrated by the main charcter Emily. I put this book down twice because I couldn't take her clingy and needy nature. But in the end she got what she was looking for and I felt like I had been on a slow moving train that was going in circles. The book club got this one wrong.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute October 22, 2013

This was a cute story. A little too much cussing, beer drinking, and talk of casual sexual encounters for my taste.

I thought the book was dull. So dull I forced myself to read, to finish.
The characters were dull, the memories read out like a boring diary.
The story from a man's point of view was refreshing, but still too many superfluous entries. sorry.
The ending was not surprising.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific contemporary romance! 4.5 stars, grade: A- January 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"In Search of a Love Story" was a delightful, entertaining book that I enjoyed reading very much. The reason that I didn't rate it five stars was, aside from being a little bit predictable as to who Emily would end up with in the end, I couldn't quite believe that a strong, independent woman like Emily would turn into such a marshmallow for such a long time in order to make her relationship with Greg work. Aside from those two things, though, this book was very well written with beautiful prose that flowed easily from beginning to end. The entire cast of characters were very well-developed and three-dimensional. The dialogues were crisp, sparkling, and authentic; they made the characters' personalities well-defined and very real. Along with the dialogues, I thought the fantastic imagery gave vivid descriptions which made me feel like I was sharing in the people's adventures and emotions. This is changing topics but I really wanted to point out that I absolutely loved Emily and her friends having no problems with Ryan's homosexuality. He was a little bit stereotyped but that didn't interfere with the interrelationships within the group. There was no explicit sex in this book and I don't remember any profanity either. (I actually read this book several weeks ago but got caught up with other things before I could review it.) When I skimmed over a few chapters, not only did I recall lots of details but I remembered immediately how much pleasure reading the book brought to me. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes reading love stories that are warmhearted and fun to let into your life. Happy reading!

Good, cute story line and smooth read. I'm not a fan of "romance novels" with all the graphic details, this was just a cute story about finding love.
