5.0 out of 5 stars Proves that nonviolence is the best response to violence
This is an excellent book for anyone who is trying to figure out the best way to respond to violence in a community. The author is an expert who has studied instances of violence in the United States and around the world, and whenever a group of people respond in a nonviolent way, they always succeed at stopping the violence.

Highly recommended, especially in...

3.0 out of 5 stars For a different point of view.
If you interested in understanding where the "peace activist" are "coming from" read this book. I found it idealistic, but now have a new respect for the forward thinking of the nonviolent movement. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and others like them are truly great people with bravery equal to many war heroes. I was somewhat alienated by the rants against popular culture (TV -...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Nonviolence, June 22, 2009

I teach a course on the History and Theory of Nonviolence, and this is the best book on nonviolence I have read. It confronts personal, social and political issues, asks important questions, such as whether nonviolence would have worked in Nazi Germany, and gives many wonderful examples of the successes of nonviolence. Its range is broad, but each chapter will make the reader think and perhaps change. I strongly recommend this book for those who want to start learning about nonviolence and for those who are already well versed in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, January 18, 2011

This is such an inspirational and life-changing book, and I wish everyone could read it. All the anecdotes and stories are so full of hope and promise. I love the notion that nonviolent solutions are just a matter of a lack of creativity. That's absolutely true. This book, along with Starhawk's books are my favorite books of all time. I do take issue with one thing, and that's the use of science in the book. I feel like appeals to nonviolence based on quantum mechanics and mirror neurons are not genuinely representing the science. I think it's a beautiful interpretation, but probably not scientifically accurate. But that's more of a minor sidenote than a real complaint. And even given that, the book is touching beyond words and something that should be read in every school.

This review is from: The Search for a Nonviolent Future: A Promise of Peace for Ourselves, Our Families, and Our World (Paperback)
The Search for a nonviolent future is a book that opens the way for people belonging to the western, Judeo-Christian, war ridden world, to dare think differently. To change our axioms about indevidualds, cultures and countries and mostly about the solid conviction that violence is the only way.Reading the book I felt I discovered for the first time something I always new, somthing about moving forwards through compassion. I wish this book will be read by many many more.

This book gives new hope to the future, where people realize war is not the answer. Especially wonderful is the underlying Christian thoughts, allowing the reader to go back to fundamental Christianity, where people considered the Ten Commandments ("Thou shalt not murder") literal, with no fine print attached.

If you interested in understanding where the "peace activist" are "coming from" read this book. I found it idealistic, but now have a new respect for the forward thinking of the nonviolent movement. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and others like them are truly great people with bravery equal to many war heroes. I was somewhat alienated by the rants against popular culture (TV - to his credit violence on TV) and capitalism, which arguably, should get some credit for the education of developing nations. If you think war is the only answer - read this book, but don't expect to get a solution, expect to expand your thinking.
