Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

It's out there somewhere--the ultimate chocolate chip cookie, perfectly baked, perfectly formed, heaped with divine chocolate pieces. In fact, the recipe for that dream cookie may well be found nestled in the pages of The Search for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie. The story behind this cookbook is intriguing. A small guest house in western Massachusetts (well known for its own home-cooked cookies) sponsored a competition to find the best cookie recipe in America. More than 2,600 recipes flooded in, and over 100 of the best grace the pages of this book. Every imaginable cookie variation is here--yogurt, ice cream, honey, pumpkin--even potato chips! Undoubtedly, many of these recipes are family secrets; others have been concocted through experimentation and chocolate chip innovation. Yet the beauty of all of these tasty treats is their simplicity. All that's required is basic cookie dough, mixed with that extra-special ingredient--be it shredded apple for Apple Orchard Chocolate Chippers, or a small cup of Kahlua for the tempting Kahlua Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookies. Some recipes are strange to say the least. How about Zesty Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies for a truly distinctive cookie? Aside from wonderful recipes, the book also provides handy hints for the storing, mixing, and baking of this favorite indulgence food. --Naomi Gesinger

From Library Journal

Robbins, author of books on prize-winning pies and pickles and preserves, has gathered cookie recipes from regional, state, and county fairs all over the country. Most are for familiar, all-American favoritesbut there are some unusual recipes here too. Nothing special, but this is a handy collection of homey, quickly prepared sweets. Steege's book presents the best cookies from a contest that generated 2600 recipes: traditional chocolate chip cookies, variations on the traditional, healthy cookies, double chocolate chips, special occasion cookies, cookies made with macadamia nuts, apricots, potato chips, pumpkin, coconut, and lots of chocolate. Chocolate chip cookies are an enduring addiction; most collections will want this. JS

5.0 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE RECIPES!, January 18, 1999
This review is from: Search for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie (Hardcover)
If you are picky about baking and eating the best chocolate chip cookies, this is for you. The book goes far beyond the regular Toll House recipe to include many versions of the traditional chocolate chip cookie as well as numerous other varieties. My husband and I have made several of the recipes and we can't wait to try all the others. You may not consider every cookie awesome, but this book contains too many fantastic recipes to pass up. Plus, it's a great deal!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE cookie book, trust me, June 6, 2009
This review is from: Search for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie (Hardcover)
I saw this plain looking book at my favorite bookstore ten years ago but after getting it on a whim I have been making the best chocolate chip cookies imaginable, I am forever grateful for these ideas, when one hits the cookie recipe jackpot, happiness isn't far behind. I decided to start with the best and try the first winning recipes and truthfully it has been my go to chocolate chip cookie recipe for years now ( page 34 Chocolate Chip Cookies I by Richard McDonald) all the recipes are form winning contestants and they are stunningly delectable. Some days I will add nuts or spices to the cookie dough, I find that coconut extract makes the cookies taste very buttery and that a pinch of cinnamon makes them melt into little cozy vanilla rounds of heaven. It's been my absolute favorite cookie book even though I have many cookbooks; I always have this out of its cover even though I know the main recipe by heart.

After collecting many books about sweets for years this is still my best buy, the 1998 edition I have has no real pictures but I don't mind. The first chapters that describe best tips and tricks about creaming butters and types of sugar and egg handling were a blessing as a teaching tool; I took my time to read the first chapters a few times so it sank in and made some really effortless but spectacular cookies. Whether one loves pecans or ginger, molasses or berries or recipes for fudge and cookies of complex textures and goo factor this has something for everyone. I love and treasure this book; if I had to recommend a cookie book to a best friend I would pick this over any other.
