Notwithstanding their considerable differences and individuality--one would hardly expect them to have a lover in common--Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Paul McCarthy and Raymond Pettibon share an artistic intent to explore eroticism and sexuality. Each artist deals, in his or her own stylistic way, with the intense physical states of ecstasy, passion, conflict and fear. Working through the medium of drawing--the "medium of the mind"--they trace themselves, scribing pictorial metaphors of an alternately tender, aggressive, attached, forceful and even erotic confrontation with the material. Creativity, itself never free from conflict, undresses itself in drawings that touch on obsession, desire and the pleasures of eroticism. (In Search of) The Perfect Lover groups together extensive works on paper from the Hauser and Wirth Collections, complemented by a selection of sculptures. Accompanying texts embrace the connections between body, eroticism, sexuality and creativity, as well as the potential conflicts embedded in each artist's work.

About the Author
Born in 1911 in Paris, Louise Bourgeoiswas raised in a household that famously included her father's mistress, who was also Louise's nanny. She studied philosophy and mathematics before turning to art in 1934, and over the next few years studied at various art academies and in the atelier of Fernand Leger, among others. She moved to New York in 1938 with her new husband, American art historian Robert Goldwater. Her first U.S. showing was in a print exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum, and over the next 50 years, she exhibited consistently in solo and group shows. In 1982, Bourgeois was the subject of the first retrospective ever given to a woman artist at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and her work has remained in the spotlight ever since.
Marlene Dumas was born in 1953 in Capetown, South Africa. After studying at the Michealis School of Fine Arts there, she relocated to the Netherlands, where she studied in Haarlem and Amsterdam. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt.
Paul McCarthy was born in 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah and he currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of Southern California. McCarthy's artwork was brought to public attention in the 1970s with his performance pieces and works in film. Since then he has experimented with sculpture, installation and inflatable objects.
Raymond Pettibon, was born in 1957 in Tucson, but has been a resident of Los Angeles since childhood. He is best known for his comic-like illustrations, complete with captions, which have won a large following among fans of Pop Art. His extremely rare self-published books are highly sought after by collectors, and his work has been exhibited in recent years in solo shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art and David Zwirner Gallery in New York. He has also illustrated album covers for rock groups including Sonic Youth and Black Flag.
