Growing Up 101,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Search for Serenity and How to Achieve It (Paperback)
For me this book was more about growing up than serenity. But maybe that is the whole idea here because it does speak of emotional growth. This book very specifically guides the reader through trouble areas to practical, workable solutions. I have owned this book for 15 years and continue to use it as reference for myself and friends.

I am a survivor of depresion for most of my adult life.Medication only helped on a limited level. I have found that if I open my mind and get outside myself, and practice the principles I have read in this book, I can achieve a sence of serenity. I have also found that when I use what I have read in conjunction with the" 12 steps of A.A". I can maintain a happy and serene lifestyle !

Search For Serenity came into my life fourteen years ago when I was undergoing a major lifestyle change and transformation. It was, to date, the most difficult period in my life. Lewis F. Presnall's book gives practical guidance and realistic advice for anyone who sincerely wishes to change negative patterns in their life or is struggling with emotional, physical, or mental problems. It's an upbeat, down-to-earth, forthright guide to overcoming life's most difficult obstacles.

Excellent-Advanced Self Help,

I rank this up there with "The Road Less Traveled" but briefer. Mr. Presnell writes about growing up, no matter what your age, taking responsibility, and quit whining. It is a very encouraging book, helping me greatly many years ago during one of the toughest periods in my life-which lasted years. I haven't read it in about ten years, but the impression lasts. In fact, as a Family Physician, I give copies to my patients having tough times. This is a book for people who are willing to look in the mirror and recognize the person who is the constant factor in their lives. If you can't do that, recognize you are responsible for the vast majority of situations you're in-don't waste time reading this-you need something else. Mr. Presnall enabled me to accept myself as I was and to accept God's grace to help me. (This is not a religious book)

The Search for Serenity (and how to achieve it),

Although this book was published originally in 1959, the advice is timeless. Some of the examples and use of American English are archaic. However, I have several quotes from the book that I have carried around in my purse for 10 years. It is a life-changing book, based on some of the sound principles of Alcoholics Anonymous for ceasing self-defeating behaviours and substituting life affirming behavours.

A nice book for achieving peace of mind,

This review is from: The Search for Serenity and How to Achieve It (Helpful Guide for Anyone Seeking Peace of Mind in this Troubled World of Tensions - Pressures - Fears) (Paperback)
I personally find this book an amazing look into the psyche of our common man/woman and his/her problems and how to deal with these issues. The vast amount of subject area covered in this book, for its length, is quite surprising. It seems that the author's ideas were very ahead, and to an extent are still, of their time. Many people could benifit from the completion of this book. This is a highly recommended read.

This is a great read. A friend from the program of recovery that I am part of, recommended this book to me. While living, during youth,I just enjoyed myself, not really paying attention to the important aspects of exsisting. I now wish to live in proper ways to fully participate with fellow human beings. This book is a helpful guide for anyone looking for peace of mind, in this world of tension, pressure, and fear.

I thorougly enjoyed this book. Originally written in 1958 its message is as strong in today's society as ever. As Lewis Presnall wrote in the foreword: "In simple language this book attempts to describe some of the practical ways in which one can replace misery with serenity". From chapters such as the "The Mask of Deceit" to "Modern Myths About Sex" its writings seemed to me as if it was written within the last ten years. It is an intelligent read yet simple and gets immediately to the point. Broken down into 16 chapters, with a total of 151 pages, it is easy to refer back to chapters that help me, such as "Replacing Self-Pity with Constructive Action". I've already given a copy of this book to a friend. This book also strikes upon family members affected by loved ones' struggles with addiction. I'm not a psychologist nor do I work as a substance abuse counselor, but I would highly recommend this book to those who are. I encourage anyone interested in finding peace in his or her life, to check this book out. I also encourage those seeking recovery or in recovery to read this book. It is an excellent resource and an eye-opener.
