5.0 out of 5 stars Queen of gothic suspense
Barabara Michaels is my favorite author. In this book, as in all her others, she blends suspense and romance without gore or graphic sexual exploits. Her heroines are always intelligent, independent, and memorable. Always a good bedtime read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of her best
I don't think I've ever read a Barbara Michaels book that I didn't like, but this was definitely not one of her best efforts. I know Ms. Michaels holds a Ph.D. in Egyptology and the back cover blurb led me to believe this storyline would pertain to Egypt, but it did so only in a minor way. We follow 22 year old Haskell on her search to find out who her real father was...

We follow 22 year old Haskell on her search to find out who her real father was and also to learn the truth about her mother's mysterious death when Haskell was an infant. The ending is a surprise, as was which of the several men pursuing Haskell that she picks, but getting there took a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!, July 30, 2003

This was a good book. I love romantic/suspense, mystery storylines and this one kept your attention through to the end. I love a good surprise ending too! My favorite author is Sherry A. Mauro, another great storyteller of romantic/suspense but now I'm adding Ms. Michaels to my list!

3.0 out of 5 stars seemed tedious instead of suspenseful, August 29, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've read and enjoyed many of Barbara Michael's books, but this one just never seemed to pick up much momentum until the climax of the story. Part of it maybe was that there were too many sorta possible love interests, and none seemed to have any chemistry with the heroine. The story was rather tedious to me, and I admit I got bored and started skimming a third of the way through. I prefer the author's stories that are more suspenseful with more atmosphere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book - Michaels always delivers - but not my favorite, December 22, 2009
By
This review is from: Search the Shadows (Paperback)
Mostly because I didn't really like Haskell. However, I really liked the other characters and enjoyed the setting and story line. I always appreciate learning something new when I read Michaels/Peters/Mertz - she expects a little more of you as a reader, but I find it well worth it. Her books are sort of romance novels for intelligent people (OK, that sounds pompous, but I hope you know what I mean).

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, July 11, 2008

An interesting, absorbing mystery. Not always psychologically believable, but always diverting, and isn't that the point?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, October 11, 2007
This book is one of my favorites from Barbara Michaels. It's discriptive and enthralling. A great read, especially for fans of mysteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Barbara Michaels's books are fun and enjoyable to read!, July 5, 2001

I'm always turning pages quickly when I read one of her books. Sometimes the endings can be a little disappointing, simplistic, but it's great fun ride along the way. The book made me wish I knew and was reading about Leah, the mother, even more so than the daughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, July 4, 1999

The opening pages of this story provide what I think is a realistic and insightful portrayal of what a person goes through when he wants to know the truth about his family history.

I refrain from giving this book five stars only because there are so many other Barbara Michaels books, including _Greygallows_ and _The Dark on the Other Side_, that are just a step above this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book That Can Not Leave Your Hand, January 26, 2003

This book was amazing, I could not put it down. Not even for a minute. It took me less than two weeks to read it all. The main character Haskell is a young 22 year old woman in search for her real Father, and the mysterious death of Leah, her mother. Once you think you have the answers, you will be surprised. The ending was good, surprising, but good. Haskell rules in this book , just because she survives alot. I reccommend this book to anyone. I am an avid Stephen King fan, and now I am a fan of this author, Barbara Michaels is a terric writer, I am going to look for another book by her now. WOW WHAT A BOOK !!!!
