Lush and informative, an adventure for the eyes,
This review is from: The Search for Vile Things: Volume One (Hardcover)
The Search for Vile Things is a beautifully illustrated book, full of the best kind of information for fans of the gross in nature. I had no idea there were so many strange and interesting plants and animals in Indonesia. The little boy Maldred's drawings are roughly charming throughout, and provide an excellent counterpoint to the beautifully accurate and delicate renderings provided on every page. This is an excellent book for teaching children about life science and observation, without making it seem like teaching. This is a fantastic gift book for any young inquisitive mind.

This book is charming, original, and entertainingly vile. It's great for kids who like to say "ick!" who will likely say in the next breath "more, more, more!" I learned about all kinds of critters I'd never heard of before. The story is delightful and the illustrations by Marilyn Scott-Waters are lovely, beautifully colored and a pleasure to view. I also LOVED the "kid's drawings" (by one of the characters) that were interspersed throughout.

Once again, Jane Hammerslough makes the unlikely, odd, and yes, vile, elements of nature fascinating and funny. My son loved her book Owl Puke and couldn't wait for Christmas to get his hands on Vile Things.

I have 3 boys, now grown, and I wish that this book had been around when they were little. Although frankly, I enjoyed it so much that I'm sure they would too as adults. Marilyn Scott-Waters' artwork always pulls the eyes in - more to see, more to appreciate, more to enjoy. I learned a lot and was endlessly entertained. Waiting for more Vile Things ...

What an original, engaging book! Hammerslough's witty prose shows kids how much fun it is to explore the world around them. Appeals to kids as well as to the adults who love them. Great gift that will be enjoyed not just this holiday season, but many more. Hammerslough's writing will entertain for many years.

Fantastic Book - Great Artwork!,

Vile Things is an awesome new book. My two sons, ages 6 and 10, both absolutely love it! The drawings are really cool and keep their attention. Marilyn Scott-Waters is the illustrator and she did a fantastic job. There are a ton of neat facts and bizarre creatures - even I was taken by how much was packed into the book. If your kids really like Ripley's Believe It or Not, they will love this! It is an adventure vacation for any kid (or parent).
Great book. I highly recommend it. Ev
