Wycliffe takes his musicianship to the next level with this sure-to-be masterpiece. Featuring a great rhthym section and first-rate guest artists, The Search is a must for any jazz collection especially for the jazz trombone players out there. This is a humbling reminder of who the best is.

Wycliffe Gordon can play! You can take nothing away from him on that score. In fact his plunger work may be the best exhibited by any contemporary trombonist. He also seems to be a very nice guy. But for people to say he is jazz music's top trombonist when considering the plethora of superior musicians out there, is naive commentary at best. "The Search" reminds me alot of a Gordon concert I saw at the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention in New York last January. He opened the concert with a remarkable unaccompanied plunger tribute to Al Gray, only to spend the next 45 minutes trying to get away with as little as possible. This included inviting a number of his ameteur sounding college buddies on stage to sit in (or kill time depending on how you saw it). He stuck to overworn and predictable cliches and kept his choruses at 2 or less. He then immediately left the venue apparently oblivious to the incredible music that had occured on that same stage at least a dozen times that day. "The Search" is much in that same vein.......above average under rehearsed music, combined with dispraportionate hype and a lack of interest towards the attainment of true greatness.
