4.0 out of 5 stars Season five continues a decline in comprehensive quality, March 21, 2011
This review is from: Stargate Atlantis Season 5 (Amazon Instant Video)
I like Stargate Atlantis for the characters, my favorites being Sheppard, McKay, Ronon, and Teyla (with appreciation and affection for Elizabeth Weir), so I watched and enjoyed the episodes and parts of season five that showcased the characters I love so much. However, I was dismayed by a decline in the story quality in the fourth season and that really only got worse in the fifth season.

There are some excellent fifth season episodes that serve as wonderful character pieces (the Shrine and Vegas), but a complaint I have about the fifth season is that much of it seems very dry and dull. They take a keen interest in their new character, Jennifer Keller, the chief medical officer in Beckett's stead and I think that in the writers' enthusiasm, they shoehorned her into episodes and scenarios where her presence was unnecessary. I'm probably a little jaded about that because it seemed that she stole many scenes that would otherwise be Teyla's and because I really couldn't get behind the incomprehensible McKay-Keller romance angle (yikes). There's also the fact that John is woefully under-utilized.

Overall, I advocate buying it because some of the episodes are my favorites overall, for the sake of completion, and to provide financial support of the franchise, but don't go into it expecting season two or three.
