Sam Yahel is a sophisticated swinger,

First I have to admitt that I could have bought this CD just to get to hear Yahels version of "A sleepin Bee".. Yahel has way to handle those standard songs ...to make then even more attractive, and his comping there behind Bernstein on the guitar solo is just .. "over the moon"....But there is not any real weak tracks on this album. On this one recorded in 1996,,, I hear more of Yahels influences from Mel Rhyne... that is pretty clear on the title track "Searchin". Apart from Pete Bernsteins playing which is an art in itself... I really like Ryan Kisors "Hubbard influenced" trumpet ..he plays so nice. Hope to hear many more CD:s like this from Yahel in the future.

If you look up "in the pocket" in the dictionary, you should see this album displayed next to the definition. These players are household names by now. For those who haven't heard Sam, this is a great introduction. His playing is sensitive, thoughtful, and hard swinging. His writing is equally impressive. The choice of tunes is brilliant, and he couldn't have chosen a better band. This record is a must have. I'm sure we'll be hearing much more from Sam in the coming years.
