Book Description

8 and up3 and up
Grizzly bears are the largest of all land carnivores and, like lions and tigers, a thrilling sight to see. Once they roamed freely throughout western North America. Today, however, their territory has been greatly reduced. One place to see them in their natural habitat is within and around Yellowstone National Park. Join Ron Hirschi and Tom Mangelsen as they take readers into Yellowstone in search of the rare and majestic grizzly. Dramatic photographs and journal pages from Ron's field notebooks offer a glimpse of their actual encounters. Along the path of the grizzlies they came to observe, you will also come face to face with a moose and her calf, herds of elk startled by the sound of the camera's shutter, and cutthroat trout glistening as the sun sets high in the Rocky Mountains. Ron Hirschi's spirited and fact-filled text, along with his notes and Deborah Cooper's nature sketches, gives the reader a "you-are-there" feel of camping and hiking in the shadow of grizzlies. Combined with the dramatic photographs of Tom Manglesen, this book offers an up-close and rare look at a magnificent animal that is truly symbolic of the American wilderness.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6–Mangelsen's fine photos and Cooper's attractive sketches accompany Hirschi's readable text bursting with the bear facts on grizzlies (with some asides on black bears). Set in Greater Yellowstone, the whole is enhanced by pages from the author's field notebooks, which lend a real-time field-trip flavor to this cycle of the grizzly's spring awakening to a high-calorie binge prior to winter hibernation. An author's note presents a plea for the protection and preservation of this great bear. Team this title with Dieter Betz's The Bear Family (Morrow, 1992; o.p.) and/or Lynn M. Stone's Grizzlies (Carolrhoda, 1993) for an excellent introduction to North America's largest land predator. Inviting and informative.–Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. Wildlife photographer Thomas Mangelsen provides beautiful color photos for this appealing picture-book-size introduction to grizzlies. Each spread combines Hirschi's smooth text, which includes facts about the bears' hibernation, eating habits, and physiology, with small inset images meant to represent a field journal written by Mangelsen and illustrated with drawings of footprints and plant life, created by Deborah Cooper. A box of bear facts will, along with Hirschi's text, support very basic reports. The vivid, breathtaking views of bears in their natural habitats, throughout the seasons, and the journal, recounting a bear-spotting trip to Yellowstone, give immediacy to the facts and may inspire readers to record their own accounts of outdoor experiences. Excellent for classroom use or personal reading for young naturalists. Gillian Engberg
