Not what I expected...,
By Rick McMorran (Colorado Springs) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Searching For A Perfect State Of Colorado: My Enlightening Experience Crossing the Weminuche Wilderness Area (Paperback)
While I found the book interesting, it didn't have what I was looking for. The desctiption as printed on the back describes the book as a chronicle of a man's backpacking adventure across the Weminuche Wilderness, interspersed with bits of Colorado history and life stories. What I found was a book of over 200 pages full of unrelated stories, interspersed with less than 10 pages about the backpacking adventure. I was disappointed.
If you are looking for a book with some interesting tidbits about Colorado history and many social discussions, you might find this book interesting. If you are a backpacker looking for a good story about backpacking the Weminuche wilderness, this book is not for you.

I really wanted to like this book. I think it's a great idea -- interweaving a chronicle of the author's solo crossing of the Weminuche with anecdotes and stories related to the state of Colorado -- but in the end I felt the book lacked coherence. Although I enjoyed reading isolated sections, the story failed to flow, and much of the material read more like a rambling blog than a well-written narrative.
Particularly irritating were the numerous errors of grammar and punctuation, the sorts of mistakes we all make when writing a quick e-mail or jotting down notes. But the book could definitely benefit from closer proofing and more scrupulous editing, as such mistakes diminish the author's credibility. Although the book had a few interesting moments, the lack of coherence and frequent editing oversights were generally disappointing.

What a wonderful page-turner of a book to read. I loved reading the history of Colorado tied in with Bill's adventure during his 100-mile journey through the Weminuche Wilderness Area of the Colorado Rockies. This couldn't have been easy with someone let alone all by yourself like he did! It had to take a lot of nerve and skill on his part. You will enjoy reading this book for sure!

A challenging hike in Colorado becomes a journey through Colorado history and a personal journey of self-discovery. Funny and insightful, Hood brings the reader along on an adventure that changes the writer and changes the reader in surprising ways. This is a fascinating book that I read in one sitting and felt entertained, emotionally touched, enlightened and wanting more at the end. I am going to reread it and then look forward to his next book.

In this book, Searching For a Perfect State of Colorado, published by Buu Press, Bill backpacks 100 miles in the Weminuche Wilderness on top of the continental divide all by himself. You'll experience his physical, mental, and spiritual experiences. His hiking events here and life events are intertwined and related to fascinating history in Colorado, some including Baby Doe and Horace Tabor, the last known grizzly bear, John Denver, Silverado, Columbine H.S., Alfred Packer, Mesa Verde, San Juan Valley unidentified flying objects, Chief Ouray and more. The book is comical and sometimes controversial. It is an entertaining book with interesting history; perfect if you've lived in Colorado or plan on vacationing there.
