One of my favorites... gives me the chills and makes me happy. I'm really not a fan of country/western,, i usually like hip-hop, jazz, or rock... anything that isn't country. But MyGAWD, this is good....

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for fans of the stars or maybe for background music ?
Two of country's finest veteran stars come together once again on this little known album . The opening and title track is a smouldering ballad where Willie Nelson's resonant vocal tones are as dependable as always and he is ably complemented by Merle Haggard . This really sets the tone for a slow , dreamy, relaxing and sometime romantic album .

Ahem,,so i know I'm no good at writing reviews, but wtf., I hope this is helpful anyway, because if I could, I'd play the album for you right now and you'd probably dig it.

Now to that review that had the 'maybe for background music' remark - yeah, I don't know, that's weird, cause when I listen to this album, I like to listen to it very loud. Its just so effortless and perfect.

Anyway, I don't normally write reviews,, but this one just doesn't have enough praise and I hope that it gets more.. but oh well, it's a wonderful album no matter how many people know about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet (and Late) Delight, August 29, 2003

I heard this on our community radio this week (WOMR on Cape Cod) and I thought that I had heard every Willie Nelson record. This was a sweet (and late)delight. The recording was made in 1987 and both singers are at the top of their form. This is an absolutely effortless album. There is some wonderful duets and some really outstanding instrumental work on this CD. I would have traded the "Yesterday" cut for any number of Nelson or Haggard songs but the remaining cuts are top rate. I would recommend this CD to any Willie Nelson fan and it may turn on a few folks to (Mighty) Merle Haggard that haven't given him a chance. I recommend this one from a true Willie fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Golden Nugget!, November 7, 2007

Thanks to Mr Kerouac's ghost for posting his
enthusiastic review of this cd because although
I am a huge fan of Willie and Merle, his review
prompted me to buy it (well ...honestly, the
good price also helped the decision).

And a wise ghost he is because this cd is a gem
and it is rewarding to take a chance on a lesser
known release and be blown away by it. What can
I say? The songs are outstanding, the singing is
beyond outstanding, the musicians are top notch
and the production is sparse and beautifully tasteful.
Im not sure who the guitarist is but there are
some very impressive jazz licks layed down over
some of these tracks which surprise and delight me.

Although Willie is my guiding light, it is Merle's
voice here that puts me over the top. I have always
loved his voice and to me he is bar none the best
country singer of all time ..."the country Sinatra"
for sure.

One more comment on the mastering of the cd. It is
very, very good and sounds as if it has been remastered
although the product info does not indicate that it has.
That means the remastered copy of Pancho and Lefty which
I just ordered should really sound outa this world. So
listen to your friendly Kerouac ghost and journey to
the Seashores Of Old Mexico.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for fans of the stars or maybe for background music ?, June 19, 2000

The " Lennon and McCartney composition " Yesterday " needs no introduction and is certainly one of the best tracks on the album .For me other highlights include " If I Could Only Fly " and "Why Do I Have To Choose ". I also thought that Merle Haggard's " Silver Wings " was well performed with an interesting mid-song musical interlude where they transfer vocals from Merle Haggard to Willie Nelson and ending with both .

When I play this album I always , for some unknown reason , seem to think of the earlier " Pancho and Lefty " album ( see my review ) which has the same artists but has a different ambience and style which I think would appeal to a wider audience , unlike this album .

This offering is good for fans of its two stars but other than the odd track I am unsure if it would appeal to a more general audience for anything more than background music .

All you have to do is relax and listen to this CD. If your heart isn't touched by WITHOUT YOU BY MY SIDE and IF I COULD ONLY FLY, LOVE MAKES A FOOL OF US ALL and especially, SILVER WINGS then you aren't listening! Both Willie and Merle were at the TOP of their careers here! A winner!

This is a great albumn. Songs are very harmonious and melodic and typically tell a story. Love it when I want some easy listening country music.

I like almost anything by Willie Nelson, and this was no exception. Amazon.com has jusgt about the best selection of Willie Nelson around. I don't know enough to critique the actual recording; as long as I don't hear any background noise (I didn't) and it's clear, I'm happy. This is a good Willie CD.

I am a fan of both Merle and Willie. Willie is my favorite and the songs on this album make me wonder if the two of them actually spent time together in Mexico. I bet they did because I believe they have been friends for a long time. I especially like "Yesterday" and "Why do I have to Choose." Of course "Seashores of Old Mexico" sets the scene for the two "renegade" musicians!
