Book Description

November 1988
Glorious color photographs illustrate Littlefield's engrossing history of coastal gardening and her directions for cultivating plants under harsh conditions. Such plants must be able to tolerate salt, sand, bad weather and other elements peculiar to the seaside environment. The author spells out the necessary steps to establish a seaside garden and maintain it successfully. Most of the book's pictures of dazzling edens imply professionalism and sizable financial investments, however. These gardens flourishing in the Bahamas, Massachusetts, Florida, etc. may be beyond the average gardener's ability, but they can serve as ideas for modest approximations to the grandeur. Littlefield coauthored Garden Design. Macmillan Book Club and Garden Book Club alternates. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

4.0 out of 5 stars A practical, beautiful handbook for the seaside gardener, June 4, 2008
This review is from: Seaside Gardening: Plantings, Procedures, and Design Principles (Hardcover)
This gorgeous book is intended to inspire and assist the gardener battling wind, salt, sand, and weather conditions more challenging than most. For encouragement, turn first to the outstanding examples in chapter 5, complete with selected plant lists used in these exemplary designs. For equal parts information and inspiration, chapter l's discussion of the seaside environment, and the design fundamentals and elements in chapters 2 and 3 are outstanding. Chapter 4 is for purely practical matters, instructing in sufficient detail to make success more likely. The book includes a list of resources and a comprehensive index. For additional information on some of these plants, see Ornamental Plants & Flowers of Tropical Mexico.
