Dynasties are dead, says King, persuasively arguing his case. Gone are oft-winning teams of the past: the 1949-64 Yankees (baseball) and their 1921-43 teams, the 1960-68 Packers (NFL), the 1957-69 Celtics (NBA), and the 1953-69 Canadiens (NHL). King also points to later post-season winners who didn't repeat after triumphs. The draft, with its parity, high salaries, free agency, and agents, are among the reasons he marshalls . King's critical analysis contrasts with the more narrative account of the downfall of New York's recent teams in William Goldman and Mike Lupica's Wait Till Next Year ( LJ 12/88), which is more a fan's book. This one is better for students and specialists.
