From Publishers Weekly

Macomber ( Morning Comes Softly ) borrows heavily from It's a Wonderful Life while following three kooky angels on Christmastime missions to earth. Mercy's weakness for machinery has led to escapades with motor scooters and escalators; she is assigned to help Leah, a maternity nurse who has been unable to get pregnant, find her faith again. Goodness, who enjoys showing up on movie screens, must help Monica, a prissy minister's daughter, find love. And Shirley has to help Timmy, a little boy who has written to God asking for a father. Despite the contemporary setting, these tales have a dated feel. Monica falls in love with a cheesy private detective; her scant sexual experience with him convinces her they should get married. Timmy's mother dates a man to whom she is attracted mostly because he tutors her son in baseball. Leah is so obssessed with her desire for a child that she makes love to her husband at only the most propitious time for conception. Although the angels are amusing, the humans whose lives they mean to set right lack character; one ending is patently unbelievable, while the other two are predictable.

From the Back Cover

Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy—three willing but sometimes wayward angels—are each given someone’s prayer to answer….

Shirley: She’s sent to answer the prayers of nine-year-old Timmy Potter, who longs for a new father, although his mother, Jody, has vowed never to trust any man again…

Goodness: She knows Monica Fischer longs for a husband and home of her own, but the young woman has practically given up on finding the right man to stand by her side…

Mercy: Can Mercy bring hope back into Leah Lundberg’s life? This maternity nurse desperately wants a child to fill up the home she’s made with her husband, Andrew.

But there’s just one catch: each angel must teach her charge a memorable lesson before the prayer can be granted…

This is my favorite Debbie Macomber book, and definitely the best of the angel trio (Season of Angels, Touched by Angels, Trouble with Angels).
The book features a trio of angels (Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy) who have to answer the prayers of three people on earth. The only problem is, the angels enjoy getting into mischief and causing Gabriel many headaches!
The book is funny and romantic. It's a wonderful Christmas romance, and does not include the promiscuous sex found in most of the romances printed today. It fits well with Christian beliefs, and doesn't offend.
I highly recommend this book, if you can find a copy! It's very hard to find as no one wants to let theirs go, and it is out of print. But, if you're lucky enough to stumble upon one, GRAB IT!

I really enjoy reading Debbie Macomber's books. And I love the stories about the three prayer ambassadors. But this book was very annoying due to so many grammatical and typographical errors. ie: mourn for mouth, tour for your, etc. So it was annoying to have the sentence interrupted with all the errors and trying to figure out what the word was really meant to be. Maybe the proof reader or typist was having a bad day.... I haven't seen this problem with the 5 books I've read so far. Just not sure what the problem was with this one. But all in all I really like Debbie's easy style of writing.

Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy are three sincere but mischievous angels sent down to earth to answer three different sets of prayers. Shirley is to help nine year old Timmy Potter who wants a new father. His mother Jody has been a widow for many years but still loves her late husband and is not sure she is ready to start dating again. Goodness is to help Monica Fischer, a preacher's daughter who wants to get married. The problem is Monica is a bit too prim and proper and the man she has fallen for, Chet Costello, is the exact opposite. Mercy is to help Leah Lundberg, a maternity nurse who longs for a child of her own. Unfortunately, she's not been able to conceive and her attempts to get pregnant are putting a strain on her marriage. The three angels have just a short period of time to fulfill their missions but will they be successful?

First released in 1993, "A Season of Angels" is a very cute if somewhat dated novel. The story is set at Christmas time and author Debbie Macomber does an excellent job of capturing the magic of the season and the three angels, who mean well but sometimes succumb to the pull of earthly items like televisions, forklifts, and church organs, are a nice touch. The three stories within the book (this is one novel not three separate stories) are all interesting although I liked some better than others. I thought the Timmy and Jody story was the weakest one. The plot was a sad one - a wife trying to move on after the death of her husband - but Macomber puts in an unbelievable twist, which, while it guarantees a happy ending, never quite worked for me. I liked the Monica/Chet storyline a bit better. Monica was a bit unlikable at the start of the story, a bit of a prig, but the romance between her and Chet sizzled and I loved reading the encounters between the two.

Christmas comes at any time of the year with Macomber’s precious & comically adorable angels.

Macomber’s calm and inviting tone draws you into this tale, but her breathtaking story keeps you there. She combines laughs with heartfelt moments in a manner that has you relating this story to your own life. She seamlessly weaves together the lives of three couples, along with 3 angels in a touching story that will make you both laugh and cry. I love the way she wraps up this story. The angels give us a sneak peek into the future of the couples. This brief yet heartfelt conclusion really draws you in.

As much as I enjoyed the three couples that we meet in this tale (and they were fantastic), you can’t top the angels. I don’t remember the last time I laughed so hard while reading a novel. Their shenanigans were priceless. You can’t fault the fact that their hearts are always in the right place, even if their actions don’t necessarily reflect that.

The melding of these three stories into one creates an incomparable tale that you won’t soon be able to forget.
