To Everything There is a Season . . .

Once, she was happy here, in the Yakima Valley that held such promise. But that was before tragedy robbed her life of joy; before that terrible winter destroyed their crop and their future. Now there is nothing but sadness and struggle. So when young Lora Cameron's husband, Eli, leaves for the summer to work in a faraway logging camp, she knows it's for the best. There is certainly enough work to keep her busy, and for company there is Will Bennet, the man Eli hires to take care of things in his absence.

Really not much more than a boy, Will is like no one Lora has ever met. A drifter, he speaks of a man named Thoreau, deigns to make supper for a woman, and recognizes in her a soul in need of solace . . . and perhaps, change. As the summer eases into fall, Will gently teaches Lora how to live and dream again--daring her to reach out to her newly returned husband and rekindle the love she thinks she's lost.

Review

"A wonderful book--poignant, touching, and very real." -- -- Maggie Osborne, author of The Promise of Jenny Jones

"An extraordinarily talented writer." -- -- Stella Cameron

"If you read only one love story this year, make sure it is A Season in Eden." -- -- Kristin Hannah, author of On Mystic Lake

"If you read only one love story this year, make sure it is A SEASON IN EDEN. Megan Chance has always been a gifted writer, but with this outstanding and powerful novel, she takes her place among the very best authors of historical fiction. A SEASON IN EDEN is Megan Chances' most breathtaking, heartwrenching novel yet, at one stunningly original and profoundly lyrical. Quite simply, women's historical fiction doesn't get any better than this. If you loved COLD MOUNTAIN, you owe it to yourself to read A SEASON IN EDEN." -- Kristin Hannah, author of ON MYSTIC LAKE

"Megan Chance has an eye for detail that other writers can only envy! I could see, smell, and feel Eli's and Lora's world. This is a wonderful bookpoignant, touching, and very real. Written by a beautifully eloquent writer. Megan Chance is a natural storyteller. A SEASON IN EDEN grabs the reader and doesn't let go. I'm sorry to say that I hadn't read Megan before, but in the future I won't miss a Megan Chance novel! A SEASON IN EDEN was a joy and a pleasure to read. A book to savor." -- Maggie Osborne, author of THE PROMISE OF JENNY JONES --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, touching and moving story, October 26, 1999
Although Lora Cameron loves her husband Eli, she is drowning in unhappiness and pushing him away. Once upon a time Lora was happy, before tragedy struck and she cannot feel any more. Now there is nothing but sadness.

Money problems arise and Eli decides to go away for the summer to a faraway logging camp and Lora knows it is for the best. When Eli brought Will Bennet, a drifter, home as a hired hand to take care of things while he's gone Lora does not want him around. Like no one Lora has ever met, Will makes breakfast for Lora, wants to hear her thoughts, and most of all recognizes her sorrow. Lora finds herself wanting to be a mother figure to Will, although Will feels differently about Lora.

When Eli comes home after a logging accident, Lora must face her feelings for her husband and the tragedy that robbed them of their happiness. I found A Season in Eden to be a wonderfully moving book. Megan Chances writes like no other, moving and and touching, not covering up for mistakes and with unperfect characters.

Living all my life in the Pacific Northwest I know exactly where Yakima is and the hardships the settlers must have endured. Hot, hot summers and cold, cold winters. Sagebrush and hills. Nothing for miles but beautiful blue sky and dust. My husband's family is from Selah, just a few miles from Yakima. We'd go to the Yakima Valley for the weekend and all I'd think about was which wineries to tour. Now the Yakima Valley is full of wineries, vineyards, hops, apple trees and cherry trees. Nothing like it was 115 years ago. I think that's what I loved best. The history and I could imagine exactly what it was like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving - worthy of 5+ stars, April 21, 2000
A Season in Eden is a painful read filled with heartache andgrief. It is not the type of book I, the love and laughter type, normally choose to read. Written in first person it is the story of Lora, a young woman whose dreams have been shattered by tragedy. It is the story of her coming to terms with her grief, facing it, and reestablishing a relationship with her husband Eli who loves her more than his own life. Although not a typical love story, this book left an emotional impact on me like very few do and I ended up finishing it in one tear blurred sitting. I was wholly satisfied and give it my highest recommendation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Megan Chance is a great writer, July 30, 2004
She just doesn't deserve to be listed in the historical romance category. She's being compared to the Grapes of Wrath.....there's your first clue. Steinbeck was no romance writer...nor is she.

It's a moving story, if that's what you want to read. No romance...period.
