Rocky Mountain Christmas

Mac McKaslin lives in Moose, Montana Territory. His folks run McKaslin Bakery that has been in the family before them. Mac is the sheriff and this cold stormy night he is awaken from the nightmare of losing his wife. The gunshots of the dream turn into someone knocking on his door.
He has to go and handle more stowaways on the train. It saddens him to see these older men with no hope. Only this time it is a young woman and her child. He can't put her in jail even though the man working for the railroad, Bose, is demanding justice.
Mac brings the woman, Carrie Montgomery, to his parents home. Carrie believes he is leaving her daughter there while he puts her in jail so she is relieved to find she can stay there as well, for tonight anyways.
Carrie is not put in jail. She ends up helping at the bakery later that day and all the town people and his parents assume Mac is courting her.
Mac cannot handle the memories assailing him when he is around Carrie so he decides to buy her train ticket. As soon as the snow if off the tracks she will be out of his life and he can go back to not feeling anything. Or has he found his heart can love again after all?
I cried both times I read this. It is such a touching story.
**There is a subtle sexual situation.

Mac McKaslin's wife, Amelia, was killed by outlaws before he could save her. Carrie Montgomery and her daughter arrive on a train as stowaways not paying their fare. The railroad men want her to pay for the tickets or be arrested or turned over to them. Mac had sympathy for Carrie and tried to offer better beginnings for her and her daughter. Events happened to bring a short story to a great conclusion. Great short story.

Maggie Greerson had watched James Fielder, the Mountie, go back and forth to Fort Steele many times. One day he arrived exhausted, frozen and had a surprise under his coat. A abandoned baby was found in a shed and no one else was around or knew whose baby it was. Maggie kept the baby and her sisters helped her with the shop. Events brought a very good ending to a lovely short story.

Colleen Garland's husband suffered a stroke and she took care of him many years before he died. Her sister, Deidre, was away at school but would be coming home for Christmas. Deidre had a mind of her own and wanted nothing more to do with school. Colleen was admant she would be going back to finish her education but was unaware of one little thing Deidre had planned. Keith Garrett was in love with Colleen before she married and thought she would wait for him to come out of the war. Events led her to ask Keith for help finding Deidre when she eloped and things began to change for them, too. Another good short story.

These Stories were Wonderful. I had to read 3 Chapters before I could get into the second story. By Kate Bridges. But it ended up a good story. But the First and Last story were the most. Very well written and I could not stop reading. Well Enjoyed Shirley Ketcham
