Editorial Reviews

Review

"Remains the best and most accessible bi-lingual edition of Rimbaud's two central books of poetry. Price is attractive."--Thomas J. Hines, Kent State University

"Peschel's translation must stand as the best English version...that has yet been published, and I expect that it will be standard for a long time."--Virginia La Charite, Nineteenth-Century French Studies

1.0 out of 5 stars crappy kindle format, January 21, 2008
By
Susan E. Russell (Yarmouthport, MA United States) - See all my reviews
I bought this book on the kindle, and was extremely dissappointed t find that the format was mucked up. The translations and the original french in the hard copy of the book lie on opposite pages; in the kindle format, the french and the english are interspersed and the poems are completely unreadable.

1.0 out of 5 stars bad quality edition, December 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
this is a bilingual edition but the lines in French and in English are all entangled in a way that is impossible to read with a minimum of fluidity. Remember, this is a poetry book, so rythm is most important, which is completely lost in this lousy format!

2.0 out of 5 stars Rimbaud the Great in a Poor Translation, November 11, 2000
By
David R. Ball (Northampton, MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Season in Hell and The Illuminations (Galaxy Books) (Paperback)
Rimbaud's crackling poetic prose and gorgeous poetry is full of inventive energy in French: in this translator's English, it is flat, stilted, awkward and energyless. If you read French, the book's OK, because you have the original on facing pages. But if you read French, why buy this?
