5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and Relevant Lenten Resource, January 21, 2007
This review is from: Season for Rebirth, A: Daily Meditations for Lent (Paperback)
Referencing sources as diverse as St. Augustine, psychiatrist Robert Coles, and movie director Woody Allen, Fr. Foley invites us to "ponder our lives and to open our listening hearts to the voice of God." His reflections are based on one or more of the lectionary readings; Sunday entries contain selections from Year A, B, and C. Each reflection is roughly two pages long and begins with the Scripture citation and a brief statement of theme.

In Luke's story of the Pharisee and the tax collector (18: 9-14), for example, Fr. Foley chooses the theme of humility as the true basis of prayer, cautioning us against adopting the modern notion that feeling good about oneself is a sign of health. "A better gauge of our spiritual health is how we look upon our neighbor," he writes. The reflection on the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32) also deals with self-righteousness, but the author attributes the fault to both sons. The prodigal's self righteousness is based on his not being self-righteous like his brother. "Such a disclaimer not only proclaims one's moral superiority, but also can even contain a sort of boast," Foley writes. "It's the pride of the initiated sophisticate who smiles down with condescension upon is inexperienced brother."

A Season of Rebirth is a good choice for individuals and small groups looking for a fresh and relevant Lenten resource.
