5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook with a Passion For Fresh, Local, & Seasonal
I love the focus of this cookbook. Deborah Madison has packed the book with terrific recipes using fresh fruits, as well as lots of information nuggets about why it makes a difference to buy locally. The mouthwatering photography tempts me to try every recipe in the book. So far I've made cookies from the book (everyone loved them), and can't wait for more fruit to become...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good on fruit desserts
This is a slickly produced publication with some interesting ideas for fruit desserts most especially. Some new stuff in the area of tarts. Illustrations are glossy, but surprisingly sparse when it comes to match-ups with the recipes. I've started using the book--it was a gift--but I'm wondering if I would have bought it otherwise with so many other convenient ways to...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook with a Passion For Fresh, Local, & Seasonal, May 4, 2010

The mouthwatering photography tempts me to try every recipe in the book. So far I've made cookies from the book (everyone loved them), and can't wait for more fruit to become available at the farmer's markets to try many more recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st baking and desserts cookbook by a celebrated chef and cookbook writer, April 15, 2010
This review is from: Seasonal Fruit Desserts: From Orchard, Farm, and Market (Hardcover)
As summer approaches, the farmer's market season begins in earnest. I plan on going to market to buy delicious fruit (and heading out to local farms and picking my own!). Although I'll eat a lot of it straight, I also want to bake some into desserts, and this is one of the first cookbooks I'm going to use.

This is the first baking/desserts-only cookbook from Deborah Madison, IACP and James Beard award-winning cookbook writer of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and The Greens Cookbook. Her recipes are reliable, but accessible for a home cook who doesn't want a lot of fuss.

Madison loves fruit, particular fresh regionally-distinctive produce, and her expertise on growing seasons and different fruit varieties across the United States shines here.

I'm particularly looking forward to summer, when I'll be able to make the Wild Blueberry Tart in a Brown Sugar Crust, and the Strawberries in Red Wine Syrup.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good on fruit desserts, May 9, 2011
This review is from: Seasonal Fruit Desserts: From Orchard, Farm, and Market (Hardcover)
This is a slickly produced publication with some interesting ideas for fruit desserts most especially. Some new stuff in the area of tarts. Illustrations are glossy, but surprisingly sparse when it comes to match-ups with the recipes. I've started using the book--it was a gift--but I'm wondering if I would have bought it otherwise with so many other convenient ways to obtain and use recipes these days. At this point in my relationship with the work, I think that its great strength is that the author of the book steers you towards tastes, ingredients and accompaniments that you wouldn't otherwise conjure up for yourself. Maybe that's what cookbooks (as opposed to Epicurious, magazines, the weekly food section of the newspaper) are good for anymore.

This book has so much information in it and the recipes are not complicated. I love a cookbook with pictures and the pictures are just beautiful. This is my summer read along with a few other cookbooks and I am enjoying reading every last word in the book. This is now one of my favorite books, I highly recommend it if you love to create fruit desserts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good not great, June 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Seasonal Fruit Desserts: From Orchard, Farm, and Market (Hardcover)
This book has a scattering of gems - Broken Jellied Wine, Dark Chocolate Pudding to name but two - amidst a lot of good-looking photos (sometimes of the fairly obvious - Chapter 2 with its list of fresh fruit you can eat for instance.) If quality paper is your thing then this weighs upon the fingers too. So all in all I suppose there is just enough here to merit the purchase price (and, to be fair, I ought to re-visit again to be absolutely sure so I'm rushing to judgment somewhat) but I wonder if this will ever be one of those indispensable cookery books?
