In recent years brand and certification has seemingly become less important, now individual models can vary dramatically in quality and performance, even within in the same brand and family line. There is however a handful of dedicated brands that still seem to maintain a consistent track record of both quality and performance.

Seasonic is one of those brands. There X-line and Platinum lines are essentially the defacto standard of the industry. They have excellent built quality, features, efficiency, accessories, and near perfect DC-DC output. There are a few other models from other manufacturers that come close, but no one is as consistent model to model and more importantly from retail sample to retail sample as Seasonic.

Without getting to technical or boring you with capacitors, transformers, and filters I have one very basic thought that can help drive home the point about quality and performance:

A Power supply company that decides to put ridiculously expensive SanAce ball bearing fans ($75-100) in all their top models is offering the consumer the best of the best. The are sparing no expense to maintain their reliability and remain the standard of the world.

This is my first "high-end" power supply and I'm happy with it. I've never had a modular power supply (individual detachable cables for components) and it was a joy to work with one. I went with this particular power supply because of the high energy rating. I leave my PC on 24/7 so the lower energy consumption is a plus. My only knock is there is a a small electronic whine (not the fan) from it. The only time I can hear it though is if I'm within 2-3 feet of it with the case side off. When the computer is assembled and on I don't hear it at all. I'm finding that this small electronic whine is becoming more common in power supplies. I notice it frequently in power bricks (for cell phones, razors, etc).

I ordered this power supply to use in a small, energy efficient(ish) Mini ITX build. I was looking for something that could power an unlocked Intel i7 CPU, a single mid to high end graphics card, a couple of SSDs and an optical drive easily and efficiently. My system is pulling about 389 Watts at 100% utilization, so way below the max rating of this PSU. I probably could have gotten an even more efficient build if I went with a 400/460 Watt fanless power supply and been OK, but I wanted a little insurance in case I end up getting a more power hungry CPU or GPU later on.

The first thing you'll notice when unboxing this power supply is the detail in the packaging. The power supply itself is wrapped in a velour bag. The modular cables come in a separate, 2 pocket pouch with Velcro flaps. There is a small instruction manual, a case badge and some cable ties as well as some really nice Velcro wire wraps with the Seasonic logo on them.

The next thing you'll notice is the fit and finish on the power supply. The steel case is powder coated a nice dark grey color, all of the plugs are solid feeling. I don't feel any play or wiggle when I plug any of the modular plugs in.

I'm running the supply in Hybrid fan control mode - this means the fan doesn't spin up at all until the supply hits 30% load - which happens rarely if ever for me. The fan runs in a silent mode (rated at 16 dBA) until it hits over 50% load - which I definitely haven't experienced yet, despite some heavy gaming.

The power coming out of the supply is clean and stable. Looking at my motherboard monitoring application (I'm using an Asrock board so it's A-Tuning) the voltages show very stable with nearly constant voltages with tiny, infrequent fluctuations, well within spec.

I have long used high-end power supplies because cheap stuff tends to lead to instability and occasionally hardware damage.

There are only a few companies which make truly world-class power supplies with stable and accurate voltage (improves stability) and high-end components (allows power supply to operate at high temperatures and increases its life). A non-exhaustive list include:

- Seasonic
- PC Power & Cooling (purchased by OCZ, which was purchased by Toshiba)
- Kingwin/Superflower (same company). These guys were the first to release an 80+ Platinum power supply and as of this review, have the best fanless model.

There are others, like Corsair, but their power supplies are made by Seasonic.
Enermax has a good reputation, but if you've followed their history, they are often problematic and even have odd compatibility problems. I'd avoid them when better brands are available.

This PSU is special in some ways:
- It isn't fanless, but the fan does not operate most of the time. When you start stressing your hardware (like a game), the fan kicks on, but stays so quiet that it sounds about as loud as a 5400RPM hard drive -- which is to say, very quiet.
- When the fan is not operating, the power supply is silent.
- Among the most stable voltage regulation of any power supply in existence.
- 80+ Platinum, so uses minimal wall power and generates minimal heat.

Edit:
Seasonic's power supply is FULLY modular, including the connector to the motherboard. This makes the power supply somewhat more difficult to fit in small cases because the motherboard cable sticks out much farther from the power supply than it would without modular connectors.
