5.0 out of 5 stars Seasons at Eagle Pond, June 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Seasons at Eagle Pond (Hardcover)
If you tend to wake up in the middle of the night to worry, this book will soothe your mind. Donald Hall writes beautifully about his life in New Hampshire in a house and a town he clearly loves. He will remind you of beauties in your own life -the sound of a snow plow clearing the roads at night, remembering your grandparents' house, gazing at a pond with mist rising from it. This may sound like the book is too sentimental - but actually it is just peaceful. The woodcut illustrations are also a pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich Prose, April 11, 2011
Hall's book is full of dense, lyrical prose, giving us a tour of the seasons of New Hampshire. Every page contains an image of wonder. A random example: "While they bloom we hover above them, taking deep and startling breaths, for their odor is all the perfumes of Arabia, ambergris of all whales of all Pacifics, wave unpon wave of velvety sensuous sweetness."

Donald Hall is my cousin so i really wanted to take time to get a sense of him as a man and as a writer. The story brings back so many fond memories of NH!

Every word of this work of prose is chiseled to perfection by Donald Hall, one of America's most gifted poets. This slight volume is among the most treasured in my personal library.

This fine book has been read and reread. Living on the West Coast I really have not experienced the "real" Seasons as shown in this marvelously written book. I carry it my car for reading whenever and wherever I can. He makes me feel the winter; the cold, the wetness of melting snow, and the beauty. He takes me through Spring, and flowers and leaves emerging. Summer and its own life unlike summers here on the West Coast. Into the colorful and lively Autumn, never to be missed by anyone. Can't say enough about this wonderful book. I came across it in a Harvard bookstore one winter while I was there at a special meeting. I picked it up these many years ago, and never put it down...
