Book Description

March 6, 2007

Lois Duncan is known for award-winning suspense novels, such as I Know What You Did Last Summer. Few people know she has led a secret second life as a poet. From early childhood, Lois chronicled events of her life in verse. At ten, she began submitting her poetry to magazines.

Since then, Lois has written hundreds of magazine articles and forty-eight books. She is the recipient of the “Margaret A. Edwards Award”, presented by the American Library Association for an “outstanding contribution to literature for young adults”. Renowned as a novelist, she kept her poetry notebooks tucked away in a drawer “like a secret vice”.

Generations of readers who grew up on “Lois Duncan” books have been urging her to write her autobiography. That task seemed formidable until she began to leaf through those notebooks. There, she found herself in every season of her life—a dreamy child, entranced by fairies and magic; an adolescent, embroiled in turbulent romances; a busy young wife and mother; a heartsick divorcee; a remarried, middle-aged housewife, watching children leave the nest; and then, as a grief-stricken mother, struggling to cling to sanity after the murder of her youngest child.

Seasons of the Heart is the deeply personal story of an “ordinary woman”, told in an extraordinary way.

“It was with a strong sense of kinship that I read Seasons of the Heart. The romanticism of the young girl; the passions, frustrations and heartbreak of motherhood; the quiet joys of aging, all are captured in the deft and disciplined cadence of poetry.”—Lois Lowry, twice winner of the Newbery Award

More About the Author

Lois Duncan was born in Philadelphia, PA, and grew up in Sarasota, FL.
She knew from early childhood that she wanted to be a writer. She submitted her first story to a magazine at age 10 and became published at 13. Throughout her high school years she wrote regularly for young people's publications, particularly Seventeen.

As an adult, Lois moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she taught magazine writing for the Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico and continued to write for magazines. Over 300 of her articles and stories appeared in such publications as Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, and Reader's Digest, and for many years she was a contributing editor for Woman's Day.

Lois is the author of over 50 books, ranging from children's picture books to poetry to adult non-fiction, but is best known for her young adult suspense novels, which have received Young Readers Awards in 16 states and three foreign countries. In 1992, Lois was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award, presented by the School Library Journal and the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association for "a distinguished body of adolescent literature." In 2009, she received the Katharine Drexel Award, awarded by the Catholic Library Association "to recognize an outstanding contribution by an individual to the growth of high school and young adult librarianship and literature."

Six of her novels -- SUMMER OF FEAR, KILLING MR. GRIFFIN, GALLOWS HILL, RANSOM, DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU and STRANGER WITH MY FACE -- were made-for-TV movies. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and HOTEL FOR DOGS were box office hits.

Although young people are most familiar with Lois Duncan's fictional suspense novels, adults may know her best as the author of WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, the true story of the murder of Kaitlyn Arquette, the youngest of Lois's five children. Kait's heartbreaking story has been featured on such TV shows as Unsolved Mysteries, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Sally Jessy Raphael and Inside Edition. A full account of the family's on-going personal investigation of this still unsolved homicide can be found on the Internet at http://kaitarquette.arquettes.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars All audiences would enjoy it, October 9, 2007

When most people hear the name of author Lois Duncan, they think of her 48 best-selling novels or her most famous one, "I Know What You Did Last Summer," not a beautiful book of poetry. "Seasons of the Heart" came about when this award-winning novelist was approached over and over again about writing her autobiography. She realized that she had a collection of poems that she started writing at the age of 10 that chronicled her life and this book is that collection of poems.

"Seasons of the Heart" is broken down into seasons of Lois Duncan's life. Springtime is the beginning of her life through the school years. Her collection of poems began at the age of 10 and I was amazed at the quality of her writing at such a young age. She must have been an English teacher's dream. The poems expressed the joy of discovery and frustrations of being a teenager.

Summer was about Duncan's early adulthood. This included her marriage at 19, the joy of being a mom, and the heartbreak of divorce when she was 27. She became a single mom to three young children when her husband fell in love with someone else. She left Florida and struck out on her own in New Mexico. After several successful years supporting her kids, she got remarried and had two more children. Her second marriage has been a very happy one. My favorite poem from this group was "the Requiem for a 40th birthday."

Autumn was a good time for Duncan. Her career took off, she graduated from college at 43 and she enjoyed watching her family grow up. The poems from this time period poked fun at the aging process - "Ode to my teeth."

Winter was a heartbreaking for Duncan because her youngest child was murdered shortly after high school graduation in 1989. Frustrated by the police dropping the investigation, she published her best seller "Who Killed My Daughter." After receiving several death threats, she relocated to Florida to her roots. She and her husband Don created a Real Crimes website in 2002 to help families keep police cases alive. She keeps hoping that her daughter's crime will be solved. Her poems - "the glasses" and "the first Christmas without her," will bring tears to your eyes.

The book ends with poems from a second spring. The poems from this era reflect her enjoyment at being a grandmother. The poems are written for her grandchildren and often include lessons about bad habits.

Overall, I found "Seasons of the Heart" to be a beautifully-written book with a wonderful approach to an autobiography. All audiences would enjoy it, from teenagers to poetry fans, and especially Lois Duncan fans (that would include almost everybody!).
