This review is from: Seasons of Light in the Atchafalaya Basin (Hardcover)
This work is basically devotion. The images you see are carefully nurtured personal visions encased in a vast, wild experience. The words you read speak of the power of surroundings: how men form them, how men are formed by them.
It is our great fortune that Greg Guirard is surrounded by one of the world's most lovely and mysterious places, the Atchafalaya Basin. It is our great pleasure that his vision is so acute.
Greg Guirard was born in 1937 near St. Martinville, Louisiana, and moved to the West Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee at age two. He began taking pictures in the Basin in the early 1950's as a teenager accompanying older members of his family on hunting and fishing trips.
Greg holds a BS degree in agronomy and a master's degree in English and American literature, both from L.S.U. in Baton Rouge. An English teacher for 13 years, Greg, with his wife and four children, has lived in Virginia and North Carolina, Belize (British Honduras) and Costa Rica. Since 1977 he has occupied himself primarily with custom cypress furniture making and with photography. Seasons of Light in the Atchafalaya Basin is Greg Guirard's first book.
