Editorial Reviews

Rumer was born and spent the very early years of her life in Pakistan. Her father's engineering job led her along with six other siblings to Darbela Dam, 30 miles northwest of Islamabad. Previously, the job had taken them to the Western Australian outback and Tasmania as well as to South Africa. . Her brother Rob gave Rumer her first guitar which she taught herself to play, and years later, she wrote all the songs on her debut album, Seasons of My Soul. Life changed when the family returned to the UK and settled in the New Forest. Her parents having separated, Rumer was educated in Carlisle with her Dad, and spent summers in the New Forest. She left school at 16, and began to drift; studying at Art College in Devon and then joining a fledgling indie rock band, La Honda. Plays from Radio 1 followed, as did early support from NME. Her mother died in 2003, and Rumer hit rock bottom. The lyrics of songs like "Healer" document Rumer's journey through grief. On the dole and back in London, Rumer took action. She travelled to a stately home in the countryside, where she essentially lived as part of a commune, owned by a "charismatic, philanthropic baronet. " Rumer's luck changed when she met award-winning TV and musical composer Steve Brown ("It's A Wonderful Life, " "Spend, Spend Spend") at the Cobden Club in Kensal Rise. Rumer and Steven worked together and produced the first single "Slow. " Having been signed to ATC Management, all corners of the industry quickly began angling for her signature. Her hard work paid off when Rumer finally signed to Atlantic Records. She released Seasons of My Soul, her self-penned debut album, in 2010.

Newcomer Rumer has been compared to Karen Carpenter and earned effusive praise from Burt Bacharach. One listen to her debut "Seasons Of My Soul" shows you why. Rumer's clear vocals do recall Karen Carpenters, and the melodic harmony-laden Pop pieces are remniscent of another era. She even sings of "Listening to the radio playing Superstar" (the Carpenters hit, I'm guessing) on the classy piano ballad "Thankful".

Everything stands out really, from the slightly perky "Am I Forgiven?", the smouldering Jazzy "Come To Me High", the enchanting and aptly titled "Slow", the retro Soul "Aretha" (about a lonesome child who finds solace listening to Aretha), to the sunny ballad "Goodbye Girl". Like a lost classic from the Seventies.

I love this CD. I'm so glad someone's coming out with this kind of music again amidst all the noise we have to put up with... Perfect voice, perfect color, perfect vocal technique, perfect emotions. Could even be my favorite rendition of Alfie. Not to mention the lyrics and compositions. If you can't tell, I'm really so in love with this CD. (I can give my KC records a bit of a break.) I'd give ten stars if I could.

Rumer is a great vocal talent. The single 'Slow' is hypnotic and beautiful. This is a promising and impressive effort for this new singer.

For 40 years, Carole King's Tapestry has been my favorite album. Rumer's Seasons of My Soul may be my new # 1. Rumer's voice is gorgeous (yes, she will remind you of Karen Carpenter to be sure, but also Dusty Springfield). Every song on this CD is beautiful, sexy, soulful, inspiring. The extra tracks (Deluxe version) of covers -- especially Alfie -- are an added bonus. I listen to this CD over and over and over, and I never tire of it.

I heard her song "Slow" on our local Jazz radio station, and just HAD to order her CD. Rumer is an amazing new talent. With a great alto voice, she reminds me a lot of Karen Carpenter. You will adore this CD; every track is superb! No filler here, the whole CD is wonderful. I played it in my shop, and literally everyone who heard it wanted to know who she was and where to get the CD.

After watching a Sunday Morning story on her I downloaded her music. What a wonderfully smooth voice. Does remind me of Karen Carpenter but also another great mostly unknown British artist, Sandy Denny. This is the perfect CD to be listening to while stuck on the freeways here in LA. It's something to take you someplace nicer.

Rumor performed on our local Fox5 news one day. I fell in love with her voice so I tried to find her CD at local BestBuys with no luck. Amazon was the only place that sold her CD. When the CD arrived I immediately opened it up - though the case with all broken, luckily the CD was ok - and began listening to her songs. I absolutely love her voice!! The music is very soothing as well as her voice. My 9 year old daughter loves the song Slow and Aretha. I highly recommend her!!

I first heard "Aretha" a few weeks ago when I moved to Wauconda, courtesy of Chicago's 87.7 smooth jazz station, and fell in love with the song. I came to Ammy and fell in love with the samples. I just got this in the mail Friday and have played Season of My Soul six times in a row. Rumer is not only an amazing songwriter, but that smooth jazz-pop voice...It's like a cross between mid-seventies Joni Mitchell, Karen Carpenter, and Everything but the Girl. I kid you not. If you love songstresses and female writers from the early 70s, this lady is like going back in time. Burt Bacharach loves her, but it's easy to understand why.

This album is the very essence of retro beauty--Joni's Court and Spark folk-jazz era, Carpenters at the top of their Bacharach game, and the sensibilities of Carly Simon's "The Right Thing to Do." The beautiful horns and orchestration on the tracks take you right back in time, yet Rumer is never drowned out, and the simpler pieces make her voice stand out even more. Her music is as personal as her unquestionable influences, ripe with poetic lyrics that manage not to go overboard. There is nothing bad among these eleven tracks, except I question a cover of David Gates' "Goodbye Girl" which isn't as painful as his old hit single. Other than this, my favorite tracks are the bouncy, hit-bound "Am I Forgiven," seductive "Come to Me High," Joni-meets-Carlyesque "Slow," gorgeously unfulfilled "Take Me as I Am," the undeniably appealing "Aretha," Everything but the Girl-like "Saving Grace" and "Thankful," and pensively Joni-like "On My Way Home."

Beautifully produced by Steve Brown, this new album is a must for fans of the great 70s singer-songwriter era. If you have not heard her yet, listen to the samples, because they were enough to convince me.
