Evelyn Eaton Whitehead is a developmental psychologist (Ph.D., University of Chicago) who writes and lectures on adulthood and aging, spiritual development, and pastoral counseling. With her husband, theologian James D. Wonderful guide to christian spiritual maturity. Each chapter includes reflection questions to guide one's thinking and to help apply the insights the author gives.

The book is in 3 parts: Vocation, which talks about the movement from child to disciple to steward; virtue, which talks about the new virtues of power, intimacy, and imagination; and a third section called "power and intimacy" which explores the virtues more deeply in regards to strength, obedience, and a somewhat out-of-place section on women and men in the church, but which is kind of the "power and intimacy" in practical action.
