5.0 out of 5 stars Ummm.... like..... wow, May 25, 2008

Back in the ring for another swing Benedictums' second album sees them ploughing ahead with their traditional metal attack and addressing some of the limitations of their debut. The album starts with an intro co-written by producer Jeff Pilson and then slams straight into heavy metal central with Shell Shock which is a face melting moment of vocal gymnastics coupled with vengeful riffing and a solo that'll bring a nostalgic tear to the eye. A full on tune that combines driving power and intelligence - and dig the keyboard touches in the bridge section before the solo.

The album then unfolds to the listener with odes to the road in Burn It Out, more intelligent couplets spread throughout various tunes delivered with Veronica Freemans industrial strength vox. And the aforementioned production by Jeff Pilson is spot on - everything louder than everything else - and whether the participants were better equipped for the studion experience this time or the budget was bigger I don't know but whereas the sound on the debut was a little flat here all is sparkling with energy.

Further tunes like Nobodies Victim and especially the less full frontal Steel Rain allow the band to explore more introspective aspects of their muse and do provide the listener with welcome relief from the battery of riffing on the disc and new insights into the bands abilities. And that's not to forget the cover of Accepts Balls to the Wall. Which was interesting partly because I thought nobody in North America remembered who Accept was anymore. So full points to them for that and also for coming up with a distinctive version that even had a fan of the original such as myself nodding his head in admiration. And apparently there is a version that has a cover of Catch The Rainbow but alas that ain't on my disc.

An excellent traditional metal album with good production, meaty riffs and the distinction of a great female vocalist. The whole package is here. Let's just hope this band finds their audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Benedictum gives classic metal a big kick in the ass, September 3, 2009
By George Dionne (Cape Cod, MA) - See all my reviews

The Good
Hold on to your asses, cause you're going to get them handed to you on the ferocious opening track "Shell Shock." Pounding drums, monster riffs, and powerful vocals courtesy of Veronica Freeman will assault your senses and please you metal sensibilities. "Bare Bones" mixes things up by slowing the tempo down to a chugga-chugga crawl. The chorus is one of those great chant along metal arrangements. An ominous piano run plays you into "Beast in the Field." Guitars slowly crawl up from behind as Veronica delivers a commanding wail that leads into a classic bay-area style throw down. Benedictum resurrect a metal classic and make it their own with "Balls to the Wall." Veronica goes all out melodic on "Steel Rain." The track really defines her vocals to the fullest. The album ends with the 11 minute epic "Seasons of Tragedy."

The Bad
Nothing

The Verdict
Benedictum gives classic metal a big kick in the ass and supercharges it for 2008 on Seasons of Tragedy. A monster album that all metal fans can throw the horns up for.
