  • Sandbox MMO
Play online with friends and scores of other players as you explore Salem's procedurally generated, mutable, never-changing and ever-changing world. Outside of the central starting areas -- where you can trade, chat, and freely enjoy social aspects of the game -- the entire game world is free for the taking, and entirely player controlled. Build, terraform, and leave your mark on the New World!
  • Open world PVP with permament death
Just because you are paranoid that does not mean that they are not out to get you, and nowhere does this hold truer than in Salem's open world PvP environment. When you have learned the skills for it, no area except the starting areas are off-limits for Player versus Player combat, except by means of defenses players themselves may construct. Progress far enough and it is even possible to kill other characters permanently.
  • A Brave New World
Salem offers a unique setting in its fantastical presentation of the frontiers of the 13 Colonies sometime between the Mayflower landing and the American Revolution. Encounter March Hares and Hidebehinds in a world inspired by everything from witch trials to folklore to Alice in Wonderland and H.P. Lovecraft.
  • Craft & Build
Develop a settlement from scratch using only skill, forbearance and whatever raw materials nature and a kind providence may provide. Indepth systems for resource managment and development mean that peaceful endeavors are always worthwhile, and also required for character development.
  • Develop your Character
Intricate character development systems based on the Humour theory of the ancients and other items of learning contemporary to the setting are the alphas and omegas of Salem's gameplay. Increasing your understanding of 'Perennial Philosophy', learning 'the Rights of Englishmen' and developing your Black and Yellow biles are all part of everyday life, and all character skills come beautifully illustrated with actual quotes from the great classics of the Western canon.

Product Description

Subscription Term: Base Game

Salem is a fully open sandbox MMO with deep crafting elements. The game features permadeath as one of its main gimmicks, along with an in-depth character development system without classes and set roles, where the player can chose which kind of game to play. Taking place in the time of the first Pilgrims, Salem lets you live as an explorer in the new world; building your settlement, learning new skills and maybe fight with your neighbours.

The only place in Salem not built by the players is the main city Boston, which is a safe-zone where one can meet other players, trade, converse and enjoy the social aspects of the game. Outside of Boston only wilderness awaits, and the further you come from civilization the darker and more dangerous the world around you becomes. Until you reach the deep lumberwoods and no longer have to fear Pilgrims but instead witches and hidebehinds...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I consider fun April 24, 2013
Subscription Term Name:Base Game|Verified Purchase
There is almost no useful help available in-game. For example, the mini-map has many many symbols/icons - none of which are ever explained to you. I spent about an hour wandering around partially clothed (at the beginning you choose a basic set of clothes from a trunk, but the game does not tell you to open your inventory and add the items there. If you click the items and drag them onto your character, as I did, the items simply disappear forever) collecting things simply for something to do. After a while my character ran out of "phlegm," and apparently couldn't then move to some parts. Another player who was online sent a link to me via chat, where I learned that you need to download programming codes and mods and do a significant amount of research before you're able to enjoy the game. In addition, the player told me to move because my spot was close to water and other players would use the water to come in and raid everything I owned. In order to move I would need to learn skills to build a new place. No idea how to learn those skills.

Final analysis = uninstall, and thank goodness it was free!

2.0 out of 5 stars Jury still out on this one....verdict is in...Guilty April 16, 2013

Although it sounds neat I'm still undecided on this one. The world is huge and I have spent hours wandering around and have not yet come across a single other player. I've heard that's a good thing though becuase if you are in the wilderness and come across someone else chances are they will kill you. There appears to be A LOT of stuff to do but there are absolutely NO instructions on how to craft anything. The crafting menu pops up and shows you what materials you need but that's it. For example, I tried to make a simple fire. The materials needed are 4 branches which I had in my inventory. I tried left clicking, right clicking, putting them on the ground, holding them, and I was unable to strike a fire with my tinder box. I kept getting an error that said there is not material in the location to start a fire, (or something like that). Your personal inventory is very small. I think it's like 12 items and so far I haven't found anything that is stackable. You can make woven baskets that will hold additional items but anyone can stumble across them and take whatever is inside. It seems that just starting out the game has a steep learning curve. Also, from what I've read on the developers site, there are only about 500 people that actually play this game.
Not sure I want to invest the time, energy, and certainly not REAL $$ into a game that at first seems to be massively frustrating and tedious.

UPDATE: Ok, I spoke with a player in game and he gave me a few tips on getting started. I can now make fire and build a couple of the beginning things to get me started. EVERYTHING appears like it will be a grind to advance but that is pretty much what this game is about. If you have played any of the big MMORPG's over the last few years like WoW, DAOC, Star Wars, etc...
