Book Description

Seattle 100: Portrait of a City is the culmination of a two-year personal project by renowned photographer, filmmaker, and social artist Chase Jarvis. Both a creative project and an insightful ethnography, Seattle 100 shares—via more than 300 stunning black-and-white portraits and biographies of each subject—a curated collection of leading artists, musicians, writers, scientists, restaurateurs, DJs, developers, activists, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, and more, all of whom are defining and driving culture in Seattle. Some faces you will know, other names you may have heard in passing, and others will have been unknown to you until now.

With this book, Jarvis has created a snapshot of a city’s culture through its people. And it’s inclusive. Descriptive rather than prescriptive. It’s a 100, not an exclusive the 100, and it invites each of us to survey our own surroundings, our lives, our friends—and those not yet our friends—that make up the place we live, whether that’s Seattle or anywhere else. Individually, the images and words here introduce you to 100 engaging and important people. Collectively, this portrait of a city tells a fascinating, interwoven story about a unique and vibrant place.

Beyond the photos and commentary by Jarvis, there are pithy musings by a select handful of subjects on the topics of art, food, community, region, culture, and film. In addition, many of the subjects share their favorite things, places, and doings in and around the Seattle that they have explored, discovered, and rediscovered time and again.

About the Author

Born, raised, and currently residing in Seattle, Chase Jarvis is well known as a visionary photographer, director, provocateur, and social artist with a consistent ambition to break down—even explode—the traditional silos where ideas reside, especially including the traditionally opposed notions of fine art and commercial art. While much of his focus is, on the surface, based in visual and representational art, his most profound interests lie in conceptual and informational art—and where they intersect.

His personal work has earned the attention of gallerists and curators in the USA and abroad, he has won numerous awards for his commercial campaigns, and he is widely recognized for his entrepreneurial acumen. Chase has been featured in print, web, and broadcast—including photography, film and video trades, celebrity, news, and popular culture media—worldwide.

A gifted leader with boundless energy, Chase finds time amidst his creative ambitions to cultivate communities, unite disparate cultures, and volunteer with numerous organizations around the globe. And he wants you to know that, while he approved this statement, his publisher wrote it with all the right pizzazz and buzz words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful insite into a city. October 16, 2010
By Andrew
Format:Hardcover
When most of us think of city, the architecture, the structure and the location first come to mind. However, it is the people that make a city what it is.

Through his Seattle 100 project, Chase has been able to assemble a book that shows the people who make Seattle the unique place that is it. From musicians to dancers, and from academics to business leaders, the individuals and groups in this book showcase some of the best that Seattle has to offer.

These images not only give me an insight into Seattle, but makes me want to take a closer look of my hometown, and seek out the same kinds of people who shape the city I live in.

Chase, this book is absolutely beautiful, insightful and inspiring. Congratulations on the completion of this 2-yr project, I can't wait to see the website and everything that develops around this project.

-Andrew

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful October 19, 2010
By DHass
Format:Hardcover
Seattle 100 is a beautifully crafted "Portrait of a City". Jarvis gets to the core of his 100 in this 240 page book. The photographs are so simple there is nothing to observe other than the people and the stories they have to tell. The words give a small bio of each person but it is the image(s) that do the talking. This is a beautiful manifestation of the old adage just get out and do it showing you do not need to live in the big cities to create interesting and stimulating material. Chase reached out to his city and shot the people that he feels make a difference in his city. Definite must buy!

It's creative, but not one of the best. Very interesting for people from seattle, no doubt, but the light sets are really easy. I was expecting more from C.J.
