5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, fun thriller!
I've read Attebery's 2 other books (Billionaires, Bullets, Exploding Monkeys; On/Off - A Jekyll and Hyde Story), and this one is definitely his best. I definitely appreciated the dark comedy that was sprinkled throughout the novel and believe it'll end up being his signature style (I hope so, anyway!). I also liked the contradictory elements of the main character's...

2.0 out of 5 stars ho hum
Not particularly well written. Too many bad analogies and random references to Seattle. I live here and love my city, but found the heavy use of references to city hot spots to be distracting and annoying. Brick is an utterly unidentifiable character written like an irksome frat boy. There is little that is original in the story, including the authors shameless...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, fun thriller!, November 28, 2011

I've read Attebery's 2 other books (Billionaires, Bullets, Exploding Monkeys; On/Off - A Jekyll and Hyde Story), and this one is definitely his best. I definitely appreciated the dark comedy that was sprinkled throughout the novel and believe it'll end up being his signature style (I hope so, anyway!). I also liked the contradictory elements of the main character's personality--he's definitely not your standard hard-boiled police officer, but is instead an unapologetic admirer of the finer things in life. There are standard-issue characters here (a retired stripper, a hitman, a crooked bookkeeper), yet they all had unexpected personality quirks that kept them from seeming two-dimensional.

There are plenty of veritable local references to please Seattleites, but one they aren't so obscure or frequent as to alienate readers from other locales, and even folks who live in places where it rarely if ever snows (like...Seattle, for instance) will appreciate the tension that occurs when an unprepared city deals with an onslaught of harsh weather. At its core, this is a crime thriller to please any reader who enjoys the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Pulpy Page-Turner, December 9, 2011

Seattle On Ice is a great little popcorn action flick in book form. This is a fine way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon, curled up on the couch with a cup of coffee and officer Brick Ransom. There are plenty of bullets, explosions, double-crosses, and enough grit to shake a stick at. If you like classic action and modern pulp, this is probably right up your alley.

This being my first Attebery book, I'm quite pleased with his writing style. I'll be picking up his previous books soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Noirish Homage to Seattle, November 30, 2011

This review is from: Seattle On Ice (Paperback)
Seattle On Ice is a thrilling, frantic joyride through the dark, cold streets of Seattle over the course of one crazy, violent, winter night as Detective Brick Ransom fights insurmountable odds to save the lives of three key witnesses in an imminent high profile criminal trial. Ransom is a man of refined tastes, but is by no means effete. He'd just as soon be savoring authentic osso bucco and cabernet sauvignon as chasing down bad guys and saving sexy dames in distress.

The action unfolds in the middle of a rare Seattle blizzard. Detective Ransom soon finds out that he can't trust anyone or anything - even his own instincts prove unreliable. He's tenacious and formidable, however, and he overcomes all obstacles with panache and style.

If you like your mysteries tinged with noir and humor, you'll love this book. As a former Seattleite, it was a delight to come across so many iconic Seattle landmarks, locations, and traditions in its pages. If you're familiar with Seattle, Attebery's technique is transformative. I'm very much looking forward to Ransom's next adventure.

With a mixture of action, dark comedy, and an out of nowhere ending, there is no reason one wouldn't enjoy this noir crime novel. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars ho hum, December 27, 2011
Not particularly well written. Too many bad analogies and random references to Seattle. I live here and love my city, but found the heavy use of references to city hot spots to be distracting and annoying. Brick is an utterly unidentifiable character written like an irksome frat boy. There is little that is original in the story, including the authors shameless references to mayor McGinn and local crime boss Frank Calruccio. There is no mystery in this mystery other than wondering how a book so boring got so many stars from the other reviewers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hackneyed writing, ridiculous story, December 29, 2011
This review is from: Seattle On Ice (Paperback)
This has the feel of a book that was churned out in a couple of weeks. Trite, hackneyed characters and writing, absurd story line (the scene in the Seattle Public Library is particularly beyond the pale) and a overly heavy reliance on Seattle place references that are meaningless to non-residents and plain annoying to those who live here (as I have for 20 years).

If you get it free on Amazon Prime (as I did) and have time to kill in a waiting room or on a bus ride there are certainly worse books out there. But otherwise save your time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reads Like a Comic Book, January 23, 2012
Too much, simply too much. Should come with a warning advising anyone over fourteen to put it down. Silly premise, silly heroes, even comes with its own sound effects - Bam! Sound of me turning to something else to read.
