Product Description

Seattle, a medley of lush green hills surrounded by snow capped mountains and sparking blue waters.

Amazon.com--an Internet company based in Seattle which has taken the stock markets by storm, and was transforming itself from an online retailer to an eCommerce platform, led by a CEO who leads this transformation but is not afraid to act goofy.

In the middle of all this lands a technologist from Silicon Valley who is looking for a youthful adventure.

It begins as a story of a technologist leaving behind his beloved Silicon Valley for Seattle. It unfolds into a moving story capturing Seattle's beauty, its interesting people and culture; and the inside scoop on the dot-com world.

Technology. Innovation. Humor. Wit. Imagination. They all come together very nicely in Seattle Adventures.

Note: Some portions of this book have been previously published as part of , "Welcome to the USA", "Artificial Imagination" and 'Inside the Giant Machine'

About the Author

Kalpanik S. is an immigrant technologist who came to the USA on a fellowship from the University of California to study and do research in Computer Science in the late eighties.

After completing his graduates studies, Kalpanik worked at both large technology companies and small start-ups in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Nashville and Southern California. He has been writing a journal about his "journey'" though US, and he finally decided to get it published.

Kalpanik (pronounced as Kaalp-Nik) means "imaginary" in Hindi. Author decided to use a pen name to allow him to separate his literary identity from his professional identity.

Kalpanik is also a great observer, not only he is able to point to the uniqueness, oddity and eccentricity of places, people and culture, he cleverly stretches it for a comic effect, making us crack up page after page.

However, even though his writing has great splashes of humor, it is also very thoughtful. Also, many of the plots, incidents and characters have a layer of a second meaning, delighting his readers when they figure out the cleverly hidden message, or the unexpected punchline, making his books cater to needs of both the readers who are looking for something light and refreshing, and those who want something more sophisticated.

For many of his books, Kalpanik has collaborated with Colin Zheng, a Ph.D. student who is doing research in the area of computational photography at the University of Washington. Colin has contributed a lot of professional grade photographs which add stunning imagery to enhance the stunning leaps of imagination, making the reader feel he is there with the author sharing his journey of adventure through space, time, life and love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Techno Tale, January 27, 2010
By
Lori B (Minneapolis, Minnesota United States) - See all my reviews
I read "Welcome to California", "I Met a Greek Goddess in Nashville" and "Seattle Adventures" all in the same day. The books have some overlapping. The third book is the story of the author's time spent working at "[...]". It's funny yet bittersweet - I learned things about the large web-conglomerate that I didn't know before.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adventures from the Dotcom World, January 21, 2010
All of us have stories to tell. Different stories of events that have happened throughout our lives. Stories that are funny or strange but also interesting and true. Seattle Adventures is compilation of just that--one person's stories about life.
Throughout the book, the author takes us on a personal journey through his own life experiences. While sharing his stories, he also offers us a fascinating glimpse into the web industry, allowing the reader to experience what really goes on behind the scenes of the .com world. Readers also experience the beauty and culture of Seattle, as he makes his way through various life adventures.
The author uses a pseudonym, which allows him to freely share his adventures without worrying about his professional reputation. This lends credibility to his adventures, as well as an air of mystery about who he is. There are times when the book lags a little, and the editing isn't always perfect. All in all, however, it is a good and easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, May 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a memoir of a successful foreign born technologist who moved to Seattle to work for Amazon.com after spending more than a decade in Silicon Valley. Apprehensive and unsure of what he'd find, he is nevertheless a risk taker, admirable and somewhat naive.

What I found most endearing about "Seattle Adventures" was Kalpanik's sense of humor--it's simple and yet complex, silly and yet sophisticated all at the same time! From page 1, I was drawn into his writing style. He is clear, mysterious, funny and the occasionally poetic and creates a diverse writing style.

I recommend this book, it's wonderful.

More About the Author

Kalpanik S. was born in India, or thereabouts, a long time ago. OK, so it wasn't really all that long ago, but it's not very recent either.

He came to the USA on a fellowship from the University of California in late eighties to do graduate level studies in Computer Science. After completing his studies, Kalpanik chose to stay back and serve the Software and Internet industries at West Coast's High Tech corridor - Silicon Valley, Seattle, and Southern California

He has been writing a journal about his "journey" through the US from the time he landed at the San Francisco Airport more than twenty years ago. Finally, some years ago, he finally gathered enough courage to get it published. Boy, are we glad he did!

Kalpanik (pronounced as KAAL-pah-nik) means "imaginary" in Hindi. Yes, it's a pen name. Author uses a pen name to allow him to separate his literary identity from his professional identity.
