Playing for the love of the game., September 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Seattle Rainiers (DVD)
Believe it or not, there was a time when sports were played by men merely for there love of the game. Before million dollar contract negotiations, retractable roofs and questionable pitching rotations there were the Seattle Rainiers. As a person who is disenchanted with the current state of sports, this film was a refreshing look into days gone by. The incredible photos, footage and sounds from those times made me wish I could travel back to sit in the stands of Sick's Stadium to watch Fred Hutchinson strickout another batter. It was a time when Seattle was brought together for nothing more than an afternoon of baseball. Not only do you enjoy the winning seasons acheived by the Rainiers, but the entire history of baseball in the Northwest. This is a must have film for anyone who enjoys baseball. It is an inspiration that provides a first-hand example of character, pride and good sportsmanship.

Moving view of early baseball in Seattle, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Seattle Rainiers (DVD)
This documentary details the glory days of baseball in Seattle. Before the Mariners were even a twinkle in our eye, Seattle Rainiers baseball was the only ticket in town. Even if you didn't live through the Rainiers era in the 30s, 40s and 50s, and even if you're not a baseball fan, the Seattle Rainiers movie gives you a look into pioneer Seattle. Great pictures of early Seattle show just how far we've come. From the "rockpile" stadium antics, to Fred Hutchinson's heroics, you will be touched by this movie. It reminds us of the simple pleasures of baseball, before multi-million contracts and multi-billion stadiums complicated it. William Arnold from the Seattle P.I. gave the Seattle Rainiers an 'A,' and it is well worth it.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS, October 28, 2000
This review is from: The Seattle Rainiers (DVD)
As a longtime Seattle baseball fan, I was totally engrossed in this video. My grandfather was the head groundskeeper at Sick's Seattle Stadium from 1938 to 1960, and I literally sat at his knee listening to his stories of Fred Hutchinson, Dick Gyselman, JoJo White, Bill Lawrence and others when I was a kid. This video truly brought the Rainiers to life for me...I even saw Grandpa Joe twice! I can't recommend this effort highly enough. Even people with only a cursory interest in baseball should enjoy it. And pay attention to comments from Edo Vanni, who is to Seattle baseball what Buck O'Neill is to the old Negro Leagues.
