The Essence of the 1981 Tour Captured, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Seattle Supersonic / Celebrating in Seattle Live [Import] (Audio CD)
This recording takes you start to finish on a typical '81 tour show, back when set lists could approach 30 songs. The nature of the sound on this is naturally raw, but that is consistent with the era. Of course you are going to hear the standard "war horses" like Brown Sugar, JJF and HTW. But, the band also does a couple of great rock and R & B covers and slows the tempo in the middle of the show for a run of gems like Let It Bleed and Time Is On My Side. This record is what "Still Life" could have been for the completist.
Obviously, the band was playing in support of Tattoo You for this tour so you get more of that album than you ever will again. And, you get the combination of musicians like Ian Stewart and even Bill Wyman that aren't with them forever. Since this tour is really the last one before you start seeing the inclusion of dedicated backup singers and a full horn section, you get Mick, Keith and Ronnie pounding it out by themselves with Charlie and Bill as a powerful "engine room."
In the end, if you are looking for a polished up gig that sounds like it was remastered a few times, this isn't for you. But, if you like hearing songs like Star Star or She's So Cold thrown in the face of the crowd, you will like this.
