5.0 out of 5 stars These women actually do rock, November 5, 2003

This review is from: Seattle Women in Rock (Audio CD)
I bought this tape for Sky Cries Mary and was excited to find that the other women on the compilation can wail. It is rare to find such a collection of women's voices in one place that are so utterly different from one to the next. The textures and tones are fabulous. The song writing for the most part is also very fun and well done. Only one "song" I could do without.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sample of Seattle Women, June 22, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Seattle Women in Rock (Audio CD)
This album is an excellent sample of music by women in Seattle. If you love the Seattle sound (i.e. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Heart, Hole), then this is definitely the album for you. If you hate all of those bands, then this is probably not an album you'll enjoy.

I bought my copy used, and I didn't recognize any of the bands listed. I wanted to explore more music by women, as men still dominate the airwaves. The vast majority of the songs were enjoyable, though a couple bands seemed to believe that screaming made for intriguing music. Those songs I could have done without.

This album made me want to hear more.

4.0 out of 5 stars too bad this is out of stock at the moment, August 4, 2000

If you can find this here, (if it ends up back in stock), I definitely would take up the chance to buy it. Sky Cries Mary, the first band on the album, is definitely a highlight and if you listen to 'Deep Sunless Sea' Anisa Romero makes it's obvious why. That is certainly not to put the other bands down at all, since they deserve a lot of credit as well. Again, if you get it, go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From start to finish - An awesome, intriguing CD., October 23, 2005
This review is from: Seattle Women in Rock (Audio CD)
First some confessions to make.

Firstly, I love the Seattle sound. I also love punk. Keep that in mind when you read this review, because if you don't like the Seattle sound, you won't enjoy this CD as much as I do.

Secondly, I tend to dislike female musicians. Of course there are exceptions (like Kim Deal, Mary Hansen, and Luscious Jackson) but for the most part, I find most commercially successful "female bands" to be uninteresting, uninspiring, and without merit.

That said, this has got to be one of my favorite CD's of all time. The songwriting is masterful and tough as nails. The level of musicianship is phenomenal for this genre. The whole CD is so darn *compelling* that it makes me want to cry every time I think about the fact that these bands never enjoyed the commercial success they deserved.

Individually, these tunes are tremendous, interesting, intriguing and tireless. However, one really nice thing about the CD as a whole is the diversity. Each tune carries a unique signature: the CD remains interesting because each band is unlike the rest. It's truly a fascinating medley of epic proportions.

If you like punk (which is well represented on this CD) and the Seattle sound, and if you like to support small-time non-RIAA affiliated indie record companies, then given the price of this CD, it would be absolute insanity not to purchase this CD.

These women rock. Every single one of them.
