Book Description

The first time Georgia Fulton gets behind a microphone at her college radio station (because of a guy, of course...), she's hooked. (Who would have thought she'd ever find a potential job where a boss would appreciate her big mouth?) Unfortunately, being a smart-mouth doesn't necessarily keep her from getting hurt by one guy after another.

With help from her friends - and loyal listeners - will Georgia finally figure out the real deal about sex, love...and maybe even herself?

(CAUTION: While there are no explicit sex scenes in this book, sex is an important part of the plot for the characters. For completely "clean" and sweet romance, please consider FALLING FAST and SPARKS FLY by Lucy Kevin.)

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst Thing I've Ever Read July 6, 2011
By Lisa
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love books. I'm one of those people with pillars of books on the floor next to my stuffed-full bookcases. I take my Kindle with me everywhere. I've read TONS of books in my lifetime.

"Seattle Girl" is - hands down, bar none, without question - THE WORST THING I'VE EVER READ. So horrible, in fact, that I was compelled to submit a review for the first time ever just to try and save others from this unholy arduous literary torture.

The main character (Georgia) is a self-proclaimed Big Mouth. She tells us this over and over and over (AND OVER) again. This supposedly gets her into all sorts of trouble. This is apparently a trait she embraces, and continually, unrelentingly defines herself with. And yet at nearly EVERY opportunity she has to tell someone off, or speak her mind, or just put her foot in her mouth, she holds her tongue. She's not without snark, but it's all happening as internal monologue. She is a big mouth only inside her own head.

Georgia and her friends are shallow and trite and straight out of Chick Lit 101. Main character: internally awkward, externally attractive - check; BFF #1: gorgeous and shallow female man-eater - check; BFF #2: gay male - check. No nuance or originality, and no reason to care what happens to any of them.

For the majority of this book (ugghh... it hurts to even call it that), the geography isn't even clearly defined. She's Seattle Girl, right? So where is she? Is it Seattle? Is it Los Angeles? Nobody knows. From paragraph to paragraph locations change. It reads like the story was originally set in L.A. and then changed to Seattle somewhere along the line. Unfortunately for us, Lucy Kevin forgot to replace all the references to Brentwood, Melrose, Beverly Hills and the like.

The alleged premise of this story is to take us through several encounters Georgia has with men in her life - ones she says she will never forget. But many of these are nothing more than a kiss (or almost a kiss) with guys she barely knows. Yet she treats these brief encounters with a sense of gravitas and mourning normally reserved for actual relationships.

And the "Big Show", the one she has obsessed over for most of the book - losing her virginity - well it happens, but it happens sort of like this: they're kissing, they're kissing, turn the page, bam! it's over. To spend so much of the story on Georgia's desire to lose her virginity and then gloss over the actual event is just... well, stupid.

But perhaps I should be grateful, as an encounter later on in the story displays for us Ms. Kevin's idea of gettin' steamy: "...he put his fingers down into my panties, down to where all of the blood in my body seemed to be pooling." I couldn't tell if the character was getting turned on or menstruating. This example was the second mention of the bloody pool between her legs during this one short romantic(?!) scene.

Okay, so now let's shoot the real fish in the barrel: spelling errors, punctuation errors, and grammatical issues abound. This was either never edited at all, or edited by a blind baby monkey (sorry monkey). Drinking "mocha's". Ending questions with periods. Quotation marks come and go as the wind blows. And Ms. Kevin apparently has a love affair with run-on sentences and awkward sentence structure. I've read creative writing assignments from 7th Grade ESL students with a better grasp on the English language.

Sadly, the myriad structural problems (ubiquitous as they are) were not enough to distract me from the tedious, horrible "writing". Please, spare yourself and skip this one. I wish I had.

3.0 out of 5 stars seattle girl from an actual seattle girl April 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I grew up in seattle, and so of course, anything based from my home city always captures my attention...
When reading Seattle Girl, I found myself laughing out loud a lot. The writter has a quick wit, and keeps the story flowing. The one thing that got me, is the main character seems so boy crazy, you want to scream "STOP IT ALREADY!!" If you like books when the main character is bouncing around from relationship to relationship, and is constantly reminding you of her virgin status, then this book is for you. Though i love the quick one liners in this book, i would have loved to learn more about the actual person and her engaging with her friends then the brief relationships, as though the men in her life is what defines her.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible. Just terrible. June 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like chick-lit. The spunkier the gal and the more impossible the hi-jinks the happier I am. However this character was so poorly developed, and read more like a boy crazy high schooler than some college girl on the brink of self discovery (which is what it appears is deeeep underneath the writer's plot intentions). Is she repressed? Depressed? A saint? Immature maneater? She runs the full gamut without the kind of writing that either makes it make sense, or makes you forget that it doesn't. You're painfully aware every step of the way that this book is skipping all over the place, with no cohesion, no guidance. Entire chapters feel like cameos and side notes. At the end, I still felt no interest or empathy for the lead whatsoever. What I did feel was burning regret that my $3 weren't spent on something- ANYTHING- else. Save your money, your time and your faith in chick-lit: DON'T BUY.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute
It was ok. It seemed kinda slow, with no real plot. It wasn't entirely terrible, just no meat to the story.
