The color photographs are very useful. This book is a good choice for the amateur. I know Abbott and Hollenberg is a standard, but many of us don't need such a comprehensive volume.

It didn't cover much of the scarce seaweeds of the Sea of Cortez where I am currently sailing, but was very informative if you are based on the Pacific coast of the US.

This book contains photos and descriptions of the macroalgae found on the Pacific Coast. The photos are usually of high quality, but some are not good representatives of the species. The descriptions are helpful for identification, but will not provide you with a conclusive answer in the same way that a more complicated dichotomous key would. Thus, the book is useful both for getting some idea of what algae you find, and for helping to confirm accuracy of photo-less dichotomous keys. It is especially useful for beginners, although those experienced in algae will be able to recognize most of the species without it since there are few species on the Pacific Coast.

There is a very rudimentary key near the beginning of the book which can help point you in the right direction. This helps prevent thumbing through the entire book looking for a photo that is similar to algae that you have found.

Overall a good algae identification companion book.

My title says it all. This is a staple in any naturalist's or scientist's library in California, Oregon, or Washington.
Great pictures and sturdy paper so you can bring this in the field. A great learning tool for classrooms too.

Seaweeds of the Pacific Coast: Common Marine Algae from Alaska to Baja California
Well organized, excellent photographs and descriptions. Also a good key and up-to-date binomials. Thus far the best book for the price on Pacific Coast seaweeds I've been able to find.

I wanted a book that would help me identify marine algae species found along the Pacific coast and this will certainly do that. It includes photographs and physical descriptions along with habitat and range notes. It appears to be fairly complete. Eelgrasses, which are not algae, are also included.

Jennifer Mondragon and Jeff Mondragon are a pair of marine biologists who have personally traversed the Pacific coast from southern California to Alaska. In Seaweeds Of The Pacific Coast: Common Marine Algae From Alaska To Baja California, Jennifer and Jeff effectively collaborate to provide the reader with a full-color field guide featuring eye-catching photographs combined with basic information about identifying characteristics, range, and habitat concerning 128 species of marine algae commonly found in the Pacific coast region. Seaweeds Of The Pacific Coast is very highly recommended as being an superbly organized and thoroughly "user friendly" quick reference which is suitable for marine biology professionals and non-specialist general readers alike.
