Now, with Sperry's, their stitching runs along the achilles' tendon, so that irritates. These don't have that. Plus Sperry's have an odd ball-of-foot insole (if you could call it that - it felt like cardboard). These are leather.
Also, these are not meant to be running shoes - they are boat shoes. For boating. You need to be able to feel the deck of the boat and these are made for that purpose, thus why there isn't a huge amount of padding. I know they're in style, but they are designed for that purpose alone. People just have to adapt that usage into how they personally use them. Boots are made for a purpose, basketball shoes are made for a purpose, running shoes...etc etc.Read more ›
Also, I've heard people complain about the design and lack of support. These are not tennis shoes, you're not supposed to go run 5 miles on these. For general wear and fashion, they're great, but don't expect them to work as athletic shoes or anything besides fashion and yachting. Once broken in, you really can feel every bit of the deck of a boat below you, practically like you're barefoot. This is their true purpose, but they work very well for every day use.
Excellent product, eligible for prime shipping, very satisfied.
The biggest thing for me though is the insole, Sperry's typically have a regular fabric insole with no ventilation, which always seemed silly to me for a shoe that is meant to be worn without socks (sweat gets trapped and breaks down the adhesive). The Sebago's on the other hand use what appears to be a leather/cork/similar material with large ventilation holes. Now, I haven't worn these long enough to know how they will hold up in comparison, but it seems like the perfect solution to my only gripe with Sperry's.
Treat these shoes with leather protection spray early or be sorry! Our one regret is that we did not treat them as nicely as good leather shoes should be treated. My husband wore them out before we sprayed them down and he has had to live with some stains. Our fault.
Nonetheless, these shoes have endured all sorts of weather from dry, hot summers to snowy winter. My husband really enjoyed getting the look of the Sperry and I loved getting them for a cheaper price. Looking for another pair since he keeps wearing them in the snow!
Now, for the practical stuff. I wear a 9, regular not narrow, in women's shoes ( a 9.5 in some pointy toed heels) and a 7 in men's spinnakers. The men's 7 and women's 9 are the exact same shoe. I have long feet, but they are not wide, and I wear the medium, not the narrow. My husband usually wears a 13 narrow, and is an 11.5 in Spinnakers. They fit us perfectly. I imagine these are not your perfect shoe to buy without trying on if you have short extremely wide feet. If that's you, make sure to order them wide.
