Editorial Reviews

IN SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES Every criminal has his own handwriting, but only Sebastian Bergman can read it.
Bergman is Sweden's most famous criminal profiler, having written a definitive, best-selling book about workings of the criminal mind. He's played by Swedish actor Rolf Lassgard, famous for his performance as the original Wallander, based on Henning Mankell's wildly popular crime novels. Bergman is strong-headed, politically incorrect, intuitive, abrasive and grief stricken. He's yet to come to terms with the loss of his wife and daughter from the 2004 tsunami in Thailand, an event that caused his life to careen out of control and derailed his work with the Stockholm police department. Personal compulsions numb the pain and make him into his own worst enemy. His life and career are completely on the skids when he returns to his hometown, two weeks late for his mother's funeral but just in time to help the local police solve the brutal murder of a 15-year-old boy. Then, a revelation from his past jump-starts his efforts to get his life back in order and deal with his sexual addiction. He s learned that therapy won't help; what he needs is to get back to work. When the Stockholm police realize they have a serial killer on their hands, Bergman knows he s still got it and insists they hire him. It's a race against the clock to catch a murderer who appears to be modeling his attacks on those of a deadly criminal Bergman put behind bars years ago. The chase is on; catching killers is the one thing he knows how to do best.

In terms of plot and character, the Nordic crime drama "Sebastian Bergman" may seem awfully familiar to those who frequently partake in the wonders of International TV programming. This mystery series features a deeply flawed protagonist who compensates for his lack of good manners and appropriate behavior with an astounding ability to solve crimes. Bergman is a tormented antihero who has distanced himself from normalcy and a successful career due to a devastating event in his past. Once a leading criminal profiler aiding the Stockholm police department as well as a renowned author, Bergman is now battling a plethora of personal demons. With shades of the UK's popular "Cracker," you know that Bergman's inherent talent will always redeem him in the end.

This DVD release features the two part introduction to Bergman called "The Cursed One." As the story opens, Bergman (always great to see Rolf Lassgård) returns to his hometown after the death of his mother. The murder of a local fifteen year old brings about unexpected consequences. As Bergman assists local authorities, it helps to reconnect him with his past successes and also to snap him out of his despondency. Confronting the unpleasantness of his past, he realizes that returning to work may be the cathartic jolt his downward spiraling self needs. When Stockholm police start tracking a serial killer who uses a modus operandi very familiar to Bergman, he insists he can be of invaluable assistance. And "The Cursed One" soon has Bergman back on this very twisty case.

As I mentioned, nothing about the Sebastian Bergman character is particularly unique. I've certainly seen a number of variations of this exact character in many other shows. What helps to distinguish "The Cursed One," however, is the presence of Lassgård.

I am sorry, but this series was disappointing. I am a tremendous fan of Lassgard, particularly his early portrayals of Kurt Wallander. I felt his immense talents and persona were wasted on this character and a rather vapid story line. Perhaps my expectations were too high.

I like to watch closed caption shows and I don't think that hearing it in English would do it justice. I really enjoy Rolf Lassgard and I liked the character of Sebastian Bergman and I hope there will be more.
