Book Description

Sebastian Darke April 13, 2010
Sebastian Darke; his snarky buffalope, Max; and fierce fighter Cornelius are off on another hair-raising quest after being hired by a rich merchant to seek out the legendary lost city of Mendip. Not only must they find it, they must bring back valuable proof of its existence. Sebastian doubts they’ll reach their destination after trudging through miles of jungle filled with warrior beasts and terrifying tribes. But then he meets the beautiful Keera, whose people believe he’s the Chosen One sent to free their tribe from their brutal enemy. Little do they know that Sebastian is definitely not the hero type. He just wants to bring back valuable proof of the lost city. But will the price they must pay outweigh the rewards?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6–8—In their third adventure, elfling Sebastian and his companions, the tiny but mighty warrior Cornelius and talking buffalope, Max, lead an expedition through the jungle to find the legendary lost city of Mendip. Losing their two hired men to various dangers but picking up four more travelers from a primitive village along the way, the explorers find Mendip, where they encounter orphaned children, a boatful of treasure, and hordes of hungry zombies. As usual, Sebastian attracts much female attention, rather inexplicably as he displays very little personality or dash in this installment, although to his credit he remains true to his faraway love, Jenna. There is plenty of bloodshed, with both friends and enemies dying like flies; the interlude at the village is puzzling; and the zombies add shopworn thrills. The ever-vocal, ever-hungry Max provides comic relief, and Sebastian Darke's fans will likely enjoy the action, but this is the most disappointing entry of the series so far.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist

Having tried his hand at court jesting and high-seas adventuring in Prince of Fools (2008) and Prince of Pirates (2009), Sebastian Darke here takes up the mantle of jungle explorer, joined by his snippy traveling companions, the pint-size warrior Cornelius and talking (well, grousing) buffalope Max. They hack their way through the vegetation and an array of beasties as they look for a fabled lost city and help out a tribe of natives, who just so happen to have an ancient prophecy that fits Sebastian to a T. Sebastian Darke isn't an essential hero, but he'll ably flesh out collections where quirky fantasies move well. Grades 7-10. --Ian Chipman

More About the Author

I was born in North Wales in 1951. My first novel The Sins Of Rachel Ellis was published in 1977 and through the 80's and 90's, I published a series of thrillers for Headline Publishing, including Speak No Evil, Skin Flicks and 1999. These books will be available on kindle in 2012.

In 2007 my first children's novel, Sebastian Darke: Prince Of Fools was published and went on to be published in 20 countries around the world. There have since been two more Sebastian Darke books - Prince Of Pirates and Prince Of Explorers. I also published three stories in the Alec Devlin series - Eye Of The Serpent, Empire Of The Skull and Maze Of Death. They tell the exciting (and sometimes terrifying) adventures of a 15 year old archaeologist.

Most recently I have published Night On Terror Island, the first adventure in my Movie Maniacs series. This book relates the story of a very strange cinema, where the new projectionist, Mr Lazarus, really can put you in the movies!
