Book Description

June 15, 2005
An Uncertain Grace represents Salgado's journey through poor villages in the Andes, shanty communities of miners in the Brazilian jungle, and refugee camps in famine-stricken Ethiopia, Chad, and Mali. This book is one of the most important visual records of life in the twentieth century. Sebastiao Salgado has been awarded virtually every major photographic prize in France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. A former member of Magnum Photos and recipient of the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, he has twice been named Photographer of the Year by the International Center of Photography.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This lovely yet disturbing book of black-and-white photographs takes viewers from a Brazilian gold mine, where men struggle with bags of dirt, to western Africa, where starving people haunt the desert landscape. As unsettling as the photographs are, they are each tempered by the sensitive, caring eye of the photographer. Aptly titled, the collection as a whole confronts us with the most fundamental question: What place do humans have on this planet? In each photograph we see what a thin line separates hope and despair. Salgado is one of the world's finest documentary photographers, and this selection of his photographs is highly recommended.

Review

"[Sebastião Salgado] shows us that concealed within the pain of living and the tragedy of the dying there is a potent magic, a luminous mystery that redeems the human adventure in the world." --Eduardo Galeano, from the Introduction

This review is from: Sebastiao Salgado: An Uncertain Grace (Hardcover)
Sebastiao Salgado has been one of my most favorite photographers since I first saw his work in Newsweek magazine. He is a world-class photographer who is also a profound humanist. Salgado uses his prodigious skills to capture haunting images of those who toil and suffer upon this earth - those who would otherwise have no voice. In this endeavor, he is a bridge between those of us who live more privileged and comfortable lives and those who for whom mere survival is an ongoing struggle. To those of us who cannot turn away and ignore his photographs, he raises our consciousness and, hopefully, our compassion for our fellow human beings. Salgado's breathtaking aesthetic would bring beauty to any subject, but the fact that he chooses to focus his lens on the plight of the "least among us" speaks to his great heart. I cannot recommend his work highly enough; it is a privilege to view it.

Open this book with caution.. It might leave you shaken. The angelic image on the cover is a bit deceiving.
