Unforgettable images,

Sebastiao Salgado has been one of my most favorite photographers since I first saw his work in Newsweek magazine. He is a world-class photographer who is also a profound humanist. Salgado uses his prodigious skills to capture haunting images of those who toil and suffer upon this earth - those who would otherwise have no voice. In this endeavor, he is a bridge between those of us who live more privileged and comfortable lives and those who for whom mere survival is an ongoing struggle. To those of us who cannot turn away and ignore his photographs, he raises our consciousness and, hopefully, our compassion for our fellow human beings. Salgado's breathtaking aesthetic would bring beauty to any subject, but the fact that he chooses to focus his lens on the plight of the "least among us" speaks to his great heart. I cannot recommend his work highly enough; it is a privilege to view it.
