5.0 out of 5 stars Roy Buchanan Picked His Guitar Clean On This One!, September 9, 2001
This review is from: Second Album (Audio CD)
Roy Buchanan was no doubt a amazing axe slinger. The fact that he remains even to this day virtually unknown fascinates me. His life was a walking blues song. His inner battles took him from us, but it was this struggle that made his playing so rough, raw and emotional. A player this amazing and emotionally driven should have garnered more attention in his short life.

Roy played his '53 Fender Telecaster (TeleRoy, or Nancy as Roy called it) like it was easy. He hit licks that remain unchallenged to this day.

The album opens up strong with the upbeat Filthy Teddy, a song that brings capo and string bending to a whole new high. The guitar sounds like it is REALLY crying. I find blues muscians that can make their instruments talk, extremely enjoyable.

Ol' Roy proved he could hit low down and dirty blues too on tracks like Thank You Lord. This painful, slow low down, dirty bottom of the 1/5 of booze blues is what Roy was best known for.

This album might seem short, being that it is only 8 tracks. But, Roy packs so much guitar, emotion and blues into those 8 tracks that you don't feel slighted or denied anything.

This is one blues album that requires no Second thought when purchasing. If you don't know Roy, then maybe you should!

5.0 out of 5 stars RB's best blues album, May 9, 2006

This review is from: Second Album (Audio CD)
Roy's best selling studio album to this date is still pure class after 34 years. Unlike many albums he made before and after this one, SECOND ALBUM has a consistent direction to it without being dull like alot of his later work. First of all, AFTER HOURS is bliss (NOTE: listen around the 1min 20sec mark, when it sounds like he gets his fingers stuck between the strings! FIVE STRING BLUES consolidates Roy's belief that he was half-man half-wolf - he makes that telecaster squeal, whinge and carry on like a pork chop. Personal favourite: I WON'T TELL YOU NO LIES; a jazzy, impressionist masterpiece that's still classic Roy.

This album plays to Buchanan's strengths: with only 2 sung-songs, there's plenty of room for Roy to steal the show with his swashbuckling fretwork. Don't miss this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Roy proves who is the "Master of the Telecaster", January 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Second Album (Audio CD)
In each of the cuts, Roy lays down tasteful, masterful and poignant guitar licks. Although his first album may have already proved it, this album leaves no doubt, answering the question of who is best at playing the electric guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank the Lords for ROY BUCHANAN, June 22, 2011

This is my 38th year of playing guitar. And I mean playing guitar like it's got to happen everyday. Roy is and continues to be such a deeply spiritual experience for me. His playing transcends the guitar. It becomes pure emotion. He makes sounds that haven't been heard on the guitar before or since. Roys love of so many different music styles definitely helped him become the player he became. I notice this more and more as I get older and have also listened to classical, flamenco, old country, world music, and jazz. I am not going to stretch this out, Roy is a guitar players guitar player. He's that special. Not a guitar guy that's in a band that has a singer and the singer sings on every song. Roy is the singer and he will make you cry and your head shake side to side in disbelief time after time. He makes me laugh and cry, what more can you ask of a guitar player.

Thanks Roy.
