I have always been a huge fan of Barbra Streisand. I love anything she has ever recorded, but like most Barbra fans, I especially have a fondness for her 1960's material; "The Second Barbra Streisand Album" is one of my favorites.

Recorded in just four days in 1963, "The Second Barbra Streisand Album" did not produce a hit single, but managed to go all the way to #2 on the Billboard Album Chart. As of 2010 the record as gone Gold selling over 500,000 copies.

This CD is filled with gems such as "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "Down With Love", "Lover, Come Back To Me", "Right as the Rain", and "My Coloring Book".

Like all her sixties albums, "The Second Barbra Streisand Album" consists of songs that are known as standards, songs that were made famous on Broadway.

If you enjoy this CD you will also love "The First Barbra Streisand Album", "People", "Color Me Barbra", and "Simply Sreisand".

5.0 out of 5 stars Streisand at her best, February 4, 2010
This review is from: Second Barbra Streisand Album (Audio CD)
There is a certain feeling some of the great artists give. It is a joy one feels they have at doing what they are doing. Streisand is in any case an especially 'live' singer. Her voice is always moving and changing, bringing out time and time again unexpected nuances of feeling. Its beauty is unquestionable but it is given an extra dimension by the dramatic character of her singing. She acts the songs in her singing of them.

The album includes the following songs:

1)Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home

2. Right as the Rain

3. Down With Love

4. Who Will Buy?

5. When the Sun Comes Out

6. Gotta Move

7. My Coloring Book

8. I Don't Care Much

9. Lover, Come Back to Me

10. I Stayed Too Long at the Fair

11. Like a Straw in the Wind

In general this is a very upbeat album, but I especially enjoyed the lamenting, longing inspirational quality of 'I stayed too long at the fair'.

I first listened to this album close to the time of its original production over forty years ago. It is still wonderful today. A classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars early Barbra at her most sublime, December 9, 2011

Barbra Streisand's second album, again under the guidance of arranger Peter Matz, carries on seamlessly from her debut disc. This time around, Streisand was able to approach newer material, while still including pieces from her nightclub act.

Highlights include the dramatic "I Don't Care Much" from CABARET (with that fabulous Fred Ebb lyric, "feet don't waltz/when the roof caves in"); and the manic "Gotta Move", complete with exiting bongo-drum accompaniment. Streisand also includes a well-judged "Any Place I Hang My Hat is Home" from ST. LOUIS WOMAN; and a singular arrangement of "Who Will Buy?", from OLIVER!, ensures it becomes another stand-out.

Streisand must have had a fondness for composer Harold Arlen's work, for in addition to ST. LOUIS WOMAN, she also gives a nod for BLOOMER GIRL with the delightful "Right as the Rain", which bookends perfectly with the former.

As other reviwers have noted, the raw and youthful quality of Streisand's vocals is still very much apparent on this album; (a lot of that was rounded-out by the time she recorded "The Third Album"); nevertheless, her infectious charm will make this album one you'll delight in revisting again and again.

This is early Streisand and her voice is great. Even though the songs are from another era, her interpretation is excellent. I would recommend this for any Streisand buff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Streisand's 2nd Reaches the High Bar Set with her 1st, January 1, 2011

Follow up albums are always a challenge. There is only one thing for comparison, the first album. Barbra Streisand's first album stopped me in my tracks when I was a teenager in the 1960s. You cannot ignore immense talent and passion even when your other albums are Elvis, the Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul and Mary. So, when her second album came out, I bought it without hearing a track. I was not disappointed. The talent, passion, and inspired interpretation were there. No, I don't own every Streisand album, and not all of them clear the high bar she set for herself at the beginning. The "Second Barbra Streisand Album" does. So, when as I replace vinyl with CDs, I added it to my collection. It's ready to rip.
