Book Description

September 2002
Pippa Hunnechurch’s life is back on track after seven years of living away from God. But her newly reignited faith is about to be tested.

Pippa, a corporate headhunter, hears from one of her placements, Barry Goodwin, that he is unhappy with his job. Not taking his concerns too seriously, Pippa gives him a pep talk and encourages him to hang in there. Two days later, Goodwin commits suicide in his apartment. Shocked and fearing she did not go the second mile in placing this candidate, Pippa launches her own investigation into what has happened. Dismayed, she tries to drop out of her Christian fellowship, but her church small group will not let her give up on herself or God that easily.

Pippa’s persistence turns up what she feared all along. Goodwin did not commit suicide; he was murdered. But who would want him murdered and would smear Pippa’s reputation to cover it up? Pippa’s research uncovers a web of conspiracy and intrigue at the company Goodwin so desperately wanted to leave.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

One of evangelical Christian fiction's most delightful mystery protagonists returns to sleuthing in this sequel to Little White Lies, and while the story may lack the freshness and punch of its predecessor, it offers an entertaining read. Pippa Hunnechurch, 37, is a transplanted Brit with a penchant for getting mixed up with murder. Her executive recruiting business in the town of Ryde, Md., runs smoothly until her latest lucrative placement, red-haired plastics techie Barry Goodwin, ends up seemingly committing suicide. The e-mailed suicide note with Barry's signature blames Pippa for his despair, and ultimately his demise. In the wake of his death, Pippa becomes a persona non grata; her business tanks, and even her buddy, Ryde Reporter journalist David Friendly, launches a hostile investigative expos. Pippa gets moral support from her associate, blonde knockout Gloria Spitz, who packs a Walther PPK automatic as well as a complete make-up kit; she adeptly assists Pippa in everything from setting up appointments to picking locks. The Benreys' first-person narrative is awash in heavy passages of sometimes formal dialogue, overused parentheses, British lingo and numerous "cuppas" (of tea). There are some genuinely humorous moments (Gloria tries a Marmite sandwich for the first time) and some too cute scenes the authors should have resisted (as when Pippa "freezes" when she takes out the ice cube tray). However, Pippa's ongoing romance with international marketing consultant James Huston, a drawling Southern gentleman, provides some agreeable moments, and the end result is a light, fun murder mystery for the CBA market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and entertaining!, February 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Second Mile (The Pippa Hunnechurch Mystery Series #2) (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment of Pippa Hunnechurch's ongoing struggle to survive in the business world despite onslaughts of evil. Pippa is a delightful character, and I'd love to have a "cuppa" with her, as well as her amazing gun-toting, bible-quoting partner Gloria, anytime. The plot was intricate enough to keep me guessing to the end. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars clever amateur sleuth, September 27, 2002
This review is from: The Second Mile (The Pippa Hunnechurch Mystery Series #2) (Paperback)
After her husband and child died in an automobile accident, Pippa left England and moved to Ryde Maryland where she opened up Hunnechurch & Associates, Executive Recruiters. Her business is doing well until one of her placements, Barry Goodwin supposedly kills himself, and in his e-mail suicide note blames Pippa.

At first, nobody realizes that someone who did not want him making the flaws of the CM-7 heart replacement valve public murdered Barry. When Pippa realizes Barry might have been murdered she tries to ferret out the killer in hopes of salvaging her floundering business.
After a while her motives change and Barry's quest becomes her mission even if it puts her in danger from a killer who has no mercy.

THE SECOND MILE is a clever amateur sleuth novel that stars a very feisty and strong-willed heroine whose faith sustains her in times of crisis. The mystery is complex with enough suspects to keep reading guessing until the climax is reached. Ron and Janet Berney have written a mystery series that will have wide appeal to more than just fans of the sub-genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Ride, July 31, 2011
By
Second Mile is that kind of amateur sleuth novel that transports the reader away from the humdrum of daily life while providing an enjoyable ride.

The characters are well drawn and Pippa breaths off the page as surely any fictional character ever created. The plot turns and surprise will keep readers guessing while providing solid entertainment. If you are a fan of the amateur sleuth, this one is for you. Highly recommended!
