Second Mouse is a good solid mystery and an enjoyable read. It doesn't have dark hard boiled violence, but has enough danger to create suspense. The characters are well drawn, the story is excellent, and the writing is crisp.

Archer Mayor is the undiscovered gem of American mystery thrillers. If you like Michael Connelly and Walter Mosley, you'll love Archer Mayor.

Two stories are told here The primary investigation is into the a woman's death. Suicide is suspected, but circumstances point towards urder.The 2nd story centers around a trio of minor league crooks, one of whom has ambitions to get into the major leagues. We don't see a connection between the two stories until a bit past the halfway point. The author has a keen understanding of human relationships and it is the portrayal of personalities and the relationships between the individuals that propel this story.

Mr. Mayor has done very well here. He gives the reader a good solid mystery with very believable characters. It revolves around a human story in which most everyone can identify. Moreover, he basically gives us two stories between the covers. All this is done without useless page-filling fluff. He also does well in giving us a mystery that touches upon, but is not filled, with blood, guts, & gore. Oh, read the short explanation of a second mouse on one of the first pages. You'll find the title fits the novel perfectly.

This is a standard offering by the author and further shows the outgrowth of a statewide police force in a small town state.
