From Toronto and Istanbul come an unusual East-West gathering whose sound is a unique, rich blend of contemporary Turkish music, New Age electronica, and alternative rock. Over the percussive beat of Debahis Sinha, the clarinet of Selim Sesler and vocals of Ozgu Ozman float the melody. Leader and arranger Ozan Boz plays his guitar along with electric guitarist Michael Occhipinti and bassist Chris Gartner. The traditional Turkish instruments are oud (Ismail Hakki Fencioglu), kanun (Didem Basar), and saz (Sidar Demirer). Sometimes the music is mystically atmospheric, sometimes it dances. The kanun zither of track 6 and the improvisational oud of track 11, for instance, take us to a hidden alley of Istanbul and Sesler's reflective urban Roma blues is featured on track 9. Two exciting and sensual dances serve as bookends. The musicianship and arrangements are exemplary. As Turkey is both a European and Asian nation, exotic Middle Eastern instruments perform with Western styles and Eastern sensitivities. This album is not old fusion but a truly modern world music.

Wonderful. If you have heard Minor Empire in some capacity and like their overall sound, you will like this. Great musicianship, good variety with different instruments soloing and different rhythmic foundations, outstanding singing, great recording.
