Book Description

July 22, 2005
The stories compiled in this book are about the veterans of the SECOND INFANTRY DIVISION of the Army. Division members have served in WWI, WWII, and Korea and they are still serving in South Korea, Iraq and Fort Lewis today. These are true stories written by the veterans of the Korean Conflict and passed on to me to be included in this book. The book is dedicated to the brave men who fought to preserve our freedoms at a cost that many of us can only imagine.

About the Author

Barbara Ann Derksen began writing seriously about 8 years ago. Since then, she has had over 2500 of her articles published as well as a murder mystery titled Mind Trap, a household management guide Dance With a Broom, and two series of six children's books each, Trumpeter Swan Adventures and Shih-Tzu Puppy Adventures. IBPW (Iowa's Business and Professional Women) chose Mind Trap as their selection for 2005. Barbara Ann is currently completing the first of the Wilton Strait Murder Mystery series titled With Warped Certainty. This first book is a mystery surrounding the disappearance of close friends and a murder, which takes the main characters to Haiti. The Trumpeter Swan Adventures and Shih-Tzu Puppy Adventure series have evolved into three CDs each with two stories on a CD. The swan stories depict the progression of baby Trumpeter Swans (cygnets) from hatching to migration educating children about their natural predators and their eating habits in an easy to listen to format designed for children from age 2 on up. Shih-Tzu Puppy Adventures tell the story of six new born puppies who lose their mother five days later. They learn to trust their human care-giver while discovering the world around them before moving to homes of their own. Barbara and her husband Henry make their home in Iowa. They have four children and seven grandchildren. Besides writing, Barbara rides motorcycle with her husband for an organization called Christian Motorcyclists Association, is a certified scuba diver, and loves all species of animals. Their two dogs, Patches and Pokey, have spent hours at her feet while she writes. Her husband just completed his own creative project, a professional CD, Miracles, original songs with a Christian Gospel flavor. Barbara is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Christian Writers Fellowship International

More About the Author

Born in Canada, Barbara Ann resided in the US for twelve years. There she was published for the first time, first in newspapers and magazines and then, in 2003, her first book was released. Watching the expressions on the faces of her readers as well as answering questions about her characters is what drives Barbara Ann to write yet another book. Her favorite genre is murder mystery but each book brings forth characters who rely on God as they solve the puzzle in their life. Her readers also have a tremendous amount of input when they wonder what happened to this character or that one, even if they are secondary to the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable!, October 14, 2005
This review is from: Second To None: Warrior Voices (Paperback)
Heroes. We hear the word every day, but the word has new meaning in Barbara Ann Derksen's book, "Second to None: Warrior Voices." We remember, along with American warriors who fought in Korea, the sacrifices of men who struggled in brutal situations...some survived; some did not. But we remember. Their stories touched me. Everyone needs to read this book about our heroes...and read about the South Korean doctor who recently treated a Korean veteran; after surgery, the doctor bowed to his patient when he learned he'd served in Korea, and said, "I thank you." You will be moved by these stories; you will learn about their sacrifices; and you, too, will be grateful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Warriors Finally Remembered, March 14, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Second To None: Warrior Voices (Paperback)
This is an interesting and unusual book which gives a unique and very personal look at the Korean War through the eyes of survivors of that conflict while serving in the "Indian Head" Second Infantry Division. Author Derksen has taken 54 individual stories, some previously printed in The Bulletin, published by the 2nd ID, Korean War Alliance, and other stories provided to her by these veterans, and has woven them into a compelling narrative. What makes this book different from most of this genre is the intimate and personal quality of each individual story. Each narration focuses on one or two specific events of combat or related events and is told in the first-person without embellishment. In fact, the self deprecating humor and complete honesty of these soldiers as they tell their often horrific stories gives richness to the text that is refreshing and extremely interesting to read. These brave men, like most of those who have been in deadly combat, do not exaggerate; rather they reveal their own hopes and fears as they face almost certain death in a number of instances. While necessarily limited to those who fought with the 2nd ID, this book gives the reader significant insight into how the Korean War was fought by those at the very sharp end of the spear. While not a definitive history of the Korean War or even the 2nd ID, this is a very emotional and revealing composition by warriors whose story needs to be told and is here told well.

Author Barbara Ann Derksen has captured the heart and heroism of America's military in her excellent compilation of stories about the U.S. Army's Second Infantry Division. At a time when our country desperately needs to be reminded to stand behind the valiant individuals who put their lives on the line to protect our precious freedoms, Derksen has published the right book at the right time.
