Editorial Reviews

One could suggest that the names Klaus Doldinger & Passport could be synonymous, for they really are one and the same. The driving force behind the group Passport, for almost four decades now has been Klaus Doldinger. We now add 8 more titles to our already extensive Passport catalog. All of these titles are making their U.S. CD debuts, being only available as high price import CDs if you can find them.

1. Mandragora
2. Nexus
3. Fairy Tale
4. Get Yourself a Second Passport
5. Registration O
6. Horizon Beyond
7. The Cat from Katmandu

It was on the second album by Klaus Doldinger's Passport began to fasion the more signiture musical style that would take full flower on their next release Hand Made. The personel are similar with Klaus taking up the duty on sax and moog again. But the metallic brittleness of their debut Passport is replaced here by stronger grooves and an equally strong sense of composition."Mandragora" and "Get Yourself A Second Passport" reall lay the blueprint down very heavy. You do have the somewhat more ambient style of "Nexus" which is really nice and dreamy."Registration O" is one of those fusion tunes that is so strongly based in a memorable theme that it works it in as many different ways as possible. At almost 10 minutes it's one of the strongest tunes here. The album itself is rounded out with the more probing "Horizon Beyond" and another funky tune called "The Cat From Katmandu". I am not one to put all kinds of personal experience of my own into these reviews but it might be interesting on this occasion. When I first heard this album it was on a scratchy, rather bad sounding used vinyl copy I got in some second hand store somewhere. When I first heard it there were so many heavy skips and pops that I didn't care for the music very much. There are a lot of times, especially with certain 60's and 70's soul records where a little vinyl scrachiness here and there help with the whole listening experience. But with music like this were every little nuance counts the digital mastering of a CD like this one really serve to enhance the punchiness and vibrancy of the analog recording. So this is an overall wonderful musical experience you can groove to,bliss out to and that really benifits strongly from the compact disk reissue medium.

As I recall, it was in late 1973 when I purchased the first Passport LP issued in the US. It was called "Passport". Now I find that all but two of the tracks on "Second Passport" were included on that LP.

I am not a fan of much of what I have heard from Passport over the years. This is my second favorite Doldinger album, the first being a World Pacific 1968 effort called Blues Happening (which I don't believe has ever been issued on CD).

What makes this album special is the presence of organist John Mealing, who is best remembered as the organist of Dick Morrissey's jazz-rock band If. Mealing appeared on If's first four albums. I very highly recommend this to fans of If who would like to hear Mealing in a different context.

On the other hand, fans of Doldinger's later Passport albums may find this one to be too heavy-handed for their tastes.

I reviewed the import some time ago after finally breaking down and paying the insane $35+ price for this release. The latest releases of the Jubilee concerts and the first 4 Passport albums are a collectors dream. The Second Passport sees another line-up change by Klaus Doldinger. Gone are Olaf Kubler and Lothar Meid and drummer Udo Lindberg along with organist Jimmy Jackson. This is the first outing for Wolfgang Schmid and the strip down 4 piece approach. All the Doldinger melodies and arrangements are there already, you can hear the future ideas. Drummer Bryan Spring is jazzy and creative in a Soft Machine kind of way.The same goes for John Mealing on keyoards. Not quite as rocky as the later stuff with Curt Cress but you can tell its comin'.The musicianship is tight, impressive and progressive. Dont miss out on the great prices of these re-issues.This is another must have along with "First","Handmade" and "Lookin' Thru"...
